Not sure when they did this, but Microsoft has greatly updated their Mappoint site, calling it Live Local. The Mappoint links from GC.com direct you to this new site. I would say it is pretty impressive, sort of a cross between Mapquest and Google Maps, with better aerial photography than Google. In a few places, they have what they call “Bird’s Eye View”, which is sort of an “EXTREME CLOSEUP” aerial view. Believe it or not, they have this feature in Rock County, which I discovered when researching a virtual cache called The Crossing. For this cache, the fully zoomed aerial looks like:

The Bird’s Eye looks like this:

To play with this yourself, try hitting the Mappoint link from this cache.

Looks interesting but seems to have more bugs than even a beta should. There were no satellite photos of my home. Should be nice when it’s all finished!
It appears you need an operating system from this century.
I saw this thread first on a PC running Windows 2000. When I clicked on the mappoint link, nothing special came up.
When I got to an XP machine, then the fireworks worked. I’m going to go play with it now.
I found it also helped me tremendously when I viewed the link using IE. I typically use firefox. Very cool, though.
It doesnt seem to have coordinants on it though. But I like it alot.
