I have found ticks crawling on the dog in temps like we have today. Rare, but more than a couple of times. I have only found wood ticks on me in the past, at least until this years gun deer hunt. I found one that I’m not familiar with crawling on my coat. It was black, and about the size of this “o” not this “.”. It actually squished rather easily too, unlike a wood tick. Any ideas of the type?
Thanks for the heads up on the new info.
You must have been hunting near your home. Spend some time in Bong RA and you can acquire a herd of those little guys. Those bigger ones are American Dog Ticks, also known as wood ticks. The ticks that are the size of a speck are deer ticks. While the dog tick is not expected to carry Lyme disease, it does carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.
… and if it smooshed that easily, I would guess that it was probably some sort of beetle rather than a tick. Deer ticks don’t squish very easily either (unless perhaps it was engorged – but then it would not appear black).
Thanks elfdoctors that’s very interesting.
I only know the animal health part of it. Went to a seminar last year about tick born diseases and they didn’t talk about any new strands of the tick diseases. So very good info.
Its also nice to learn the human side of it. I know what symptoms to watch for when my pets get a tick. But me….who knows.
Thanks
