As was announced at the campout, the switchover to the new WGA website and web server is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 26th to May 29th. I will probably start the migration Friday night, completing it by the end of the day Saturday. It will then take some time for the DNS changes to propagate out to the Internet (just like during our last unexpected server move), so it could be another day or two before everyone is able to access the new server/site. I would plan on being without the WGA site the entire 3 day weekend.
Note that no data will be lost in the upgrade. All message board posts, membership information, Cache of the Month data, etc. will survive intact. You’ll be able to log into the new WGA site with the same username and password as before. If you had both forum and WGA membership accounts, your password will be your forum password.
So far everything appears to be on track for a switchover on this weekend, but I will keep you posted if anything changes…

The new server has been delivered to Alan and Arn and will be installed in its posh new Lake Geneva home (in the laundromat closet ) by Thursday afternoon.
The current timing of switchover events this weekend looks like:
– Old server will be taken offline sometime after 8pm on Friday
– All data on the old server will be copied off it on Friday night
– Data will be copied to the new server Saturday morning, the rest of the day will be spent prepping various features
– New website will be available sometime late SaturdayWe recently switched our DNS scheme… this change will allow everyone to access the new site almost immediately after it is ready. (The last time the server was moved, some people could not access the site for 1+ day because of DNS issues.) You will also see a “switchover in progress” message if you go to wi-geocaching.com on Saturday, and this is how we will post information on any delays/snags/etc. that may occur.
Here are a couple pictures of the new server. The most impressive thing about it is its 11 fans, which will hopefully keep it from melting down in its new home…

05/25/2006 at 11:56 am #1739324Just looking at the pictures you can tell that the server is made just for us.
The server:
• Has a WGA sticker.
• Has several forms of CACHE.
• Has MULTIPLE MICRO processors.
• Will employ VIRTUAL memory.
• Uses NANO technology.
• Is a box with lots of stuff in it.
• Will be BENCHMARKed to measure its performance
• Is obviously a TRADE-UP.Let’s hope that Jeremy doesn’t run into any MYSTERYs (?) or BUGS this weekend.
Good luck and we’ll see y’all on the far side.

Sorry Ken, I forgot this is a family friendly site.
Actually, removing the cover was the first thing I did when the server arrived… there was no methodical setup, reading of manuals, checking of compatibility, (talking about feelings, foreplay ), etc. Of course I work with large numbers of “naked” electronics on a daily basis, so I guess I am kind of a geeky Hugh Hefner.
