Did you ever want to do something crazy to ring in the New Year?

    Well here is your chance!!

Come on down to the Racine Lakefront and ‘go jump in the lake!’

Everyone is invited down to Racine on January 1, 2005 at noon for our annual Polar Bear Dip.

Now I know what you are thinking…You’re nuts!! You’re probably right but this will be Mr. Traker’s 14th dip in Lake Michigan and Mrs. Traker’s 3rd.

Meet us on the Beach at N 42 44.382 W 087 46.726 at 11:30 AM, the dip is promptly at Noon so be on the beach no later than 11:45 AM. There will be hundreds of people there to watch, so the coordinates are needed to find the group. Parking can be found at N 42 44.320 W 087 46.852 or on nearby streets.

After the Polar Bear Dip we will convene at the Chancery restaurant for a little lunch while we warm our toes! We will discuss our caching goals for the New Year and other odds and ends.

Since Mr. & Mrs. Traker have done this before we would like to give those who are willing to plunge some detail of what to bring:

    You should wear:

    • (Warm clothes in lots of layers…duh!)
    • Swimsuit – wet suits don’t count!
    • Sweat pants (running pants – something easy to get on/off)
    • Heavy socks (or 2 pair regular socks)
    • Shoes (something you can slip off/on easily)
    • T-shirt
    • Sweat shirt (sweater)
    • Coat
    • Hat (something to keep head and/or ears warm)

    Bring with:

    • Blankets (for the ground)
    • Beach towel (maybe 2 but 1 is enough)
    • Dry shorts (if you wish to change)
    • Mittens/gloves
    • Hat (if you don’t wear one)
    • Water socks or sandals to wear into the water (THIS ONE IS A MUST HAVE!)

    That’s it…Have fun!

Post a note that you are coming so we can keep an eye out for you.

We hope to see you there.

You folks sound nuts! Who would want to be a POLAR BEAR anyway? You can count me in.

Hey, post it as an event cache, and I’m sure you’ll get some takers. What a way to add to your cache count!

If I came and went in with naked feet …. do I count each sharp rock I step on as a find?

Unfortunately this does not qualify as an event cache. We wanted to do that last year, but as geocaching is not the main ‘purpose’ of this event, it does not meet the geocache approval requirements. We’ve tried to figure out how to make it into an event, but just didn’t get to it this year.

We hope people can join us, to jump or to watch. The Enigma cache is very, very close, so maybe that can be an incentive.

Okay — that clinches it. I need to find Enigma. I’ve always wanted to do a Polar Bear Freezing Cold Plunge, but I cannot guarantee I would get the guts to actually do it. I can come to cheer you on however, and if the spirit moves me, we’ll see if I get a courageous streak.

if you called it a winter picnic and placed an underwater temp cache as an event it might be approved?

I have searched my Excuses Notebook from cover to cover. I just can’t find one to get out of coming to watch. So, I guess we will be there [again].

Now, if i could just find that old megaphone to cheer you on…

I plunged last year in Chicago and it was so much fun, so I decided to try Racine with some of my crazy friends.

Hmmm…..I asked tishman if he wanted to go to the lake new years and he said “I ain’t goin swimmin …lol. Course I could always go jump in the lake myself . We may come and cheer folks on. If I can get tishman away from the bowl games….he’s watching one now as I type. Guess that’s a maybe.

Just one last reminder. This is going to be one of the warmest New Year’s days on record–mid 30s! If you’ve ever thought…just once in my life I should take this dare and jump in the lake in WI in January….then this would be the year to do it. Out of the last 15 years of jumping, many years have been single digits or lower, with windchills in the negative. This year will be quite nice to jump (or at least to watch)!

    Hope to see you there!

What’s blue and floats in Lake Michigan? Uhmmm…me! Well, not so much floating as running in, sitting down, running out! 3 words: OH MY GOSH!!!
I got stuck by a train so missed the masses in the Lake, but did get there in time to park, and do my thing before the wrist bands were all gone. (Actually, the guy who gave it to me said he was happy I went in…most people who get there late just watch then leave) I didn’t drive all that way to leave!
After I dried off I headed to the restraunt to meet the rest of those who went to the lake. I was sadly surprised to only find 5 people there. I really thought there would be more people. Oh well! Thanks to Folk Trakers for posting this event! I never would have known about it if not for them. And I’m very happy to hear that Mr Meister is one of the originals! Thanks also for advise on how to warm up…if only it were working!
Thanks also to Trudy & the Beast and Greyhounder for showing up to support those in it for the swim. I’m told that MR Anderson was there but got there late and left…well, hmmmm….
To anyone wondering…IT WAS A BLAST and if I’m still around next year I’m going back!
I left my suit in the trunk…I wonder if there are icicles on it…LOL!
