I don’t know if any of you do highpointing but the following article on Rhode Islands highpoint has a geocaching tie in.
Sunday, February 16th marked the first open access
day of 2003 for Jerimoth Hill, Rhode Island.
Overcast gray skies and a morning temperature of zero
rising to only a high of 14 around noon still brought
out some hardy summit bound trekkers throughout the
day.
The access trail from highway to summit was about
6-8 inches of powder over hard pack.
Barebootin’ (everything from sneakers and shorts to
full on -40 Mukluks and trekking poles) seemed to be
the choices of ascent.
All total, thirty people from 7 states made the
arduous journey to stand on the coveted rock and have
their summit photos taken.
Steve Harding from New Hampshire and a new Highpoint
member, declared Rhode Island to be his first official
highpoint, upon which his support group applauded and
offered Lobster dinner for his successful summit.
Dr. Bob, another Highpointer, and his wife flew in
from Texas to personally present Chuck Bickes with a
giant bar of chocolate from the Schindlers. They also
had their son, a college student from Boston, with
them so they could visit the highpoint together.
Three adventurers in the sport of Geocaching showed
up early morning but unsuccessful after an hour or so
promised to return later in the day to continue the
search for the hidden metal container buried somewhere
out in the woods beneath the frozen ground. Sure
enough, two of them came back with one of their
children’s metal detectors for a last ditch effort. By
5 PM they were out of the woods and out of luck.
Undeterred and not at all disappointed, they promised
to return to the hunt on the next access date
About mid-afternoon Paul Kandarian, a freelance
writer for RI Monthly stopped by and interviewed
several visitors for a column called “Rhode Trip” a
fun look at stuff to do in Rhode Island. He said it
would probably be in April’s issue.
Another Highpointer and volunteer, Steve Urbanski,
spent the afternoon as a guide leading various size
groups to the summit and carefully framing them in the
camera lens for the perfect summit photo.
All in all, a great day spent on a highpoint!
Breakdown by state:
CT 3, MA 6, NH 2, ME 3, PA 1, RI 12, TX 3
Total 30 of which 3 were Geocaching and 6 were
Highpoint Club Members.
Dr. Bob, from Texas, longest distance traveled to
visit Jerimoth Hill.

But thanks for posting the article and bringing to our attention.
