“Where would you like to be? The site for the spring campout has not been selected. In the past that decision has been made by the end of the calendar year so we can get our campsite application in soon after the first of the year. If you have ideas for a location with good group camp sites and plenty of good hiking areas, let a board member know and we’ll look into it.”

Ken posted this question on a different thread, but I thought I’d start a new one, as it is a topic in of itself.

We suggest having a campout up north, perhaps Pattison SP, Copper Falls SP? Any other suggestions?

I’ve always though that for a one-day event like a picnic, I’d prefer not to have to drive six hours to get there and have to drive another six to get home after a long day of walking. Coming from Kenosha, that would probably be somewhere in the SE quarter of the state.

For a campout though, I’d be willing to travel pretty much anywhere in the state if it’s get there on a Friday, cache all day Saturday, then take it easy on Sunday and head for home.

That being said, Bong in Kenosha County, less than a half hour from my house, would be an ideal spot for an event, if not a campout then the next picnic. There are two main campsites, a group camping site, and over 45 miles of trails on a wide variety of terrain (ask anyone who’s found “Gee, I’m a Tree”!)

Unfortunately, my State Park camping experience is limited to Peninsula, Governor Dodge, and High Cliff, so I’d have to defer to someone else for recommendations in other areas of the state.

One suggestion previously made is Hartman Creek State Park just outside of Waupaca.

Is anyone else interested in a date change for next year?? It has always fallen on the same weekend as the largest Amateur radio gathering in the world. I sure would like to make both some year.

Excellent thread! By starting now with your input, we can gather more ideas and opinions for planning next year’s campout and picnic. We can’t guarantee that final decisions will be made strictly on a poll of members, but we will certainly listen to members’ input.

    Keep those location ideas coming.

Meanwhile, let’s talk about dates also. The WGA board has not yet discussed a date for the campout, but if we were to hold to tradition of the past two WGA campouts, it would be the weekend of May 14-16, 2004. Let me ask those of you who will most likely attend: is that your preferred weekend? If not, what is? Please share your input.

I’d be in favor of a different date. I have a graduation to attend on May 15th, so I would not be able to make it to the campout if it were the 14-16th.

We like the date of the campout, but would like to see the picnic moved to end of September when it is much less likely to be 90 degrees outside.

I love Hartmans Creek State Park! Might be tougher to hide stuff than High Cliff was though.

I would also like to place my vote on Hartman Creek. That’s a great park with a really nice group camp area and plenty of places to hide caches.

One more vote for Hartman’s Creek!

We also vote for Hartmans Creek. This is one of our favorite parks with lots to do.

Bumping this topic to the active list. We’re still open to suggestions for locations and dates for the spring 2004 campout. While you’re at it, how about ideas for the picnic?

We still like the idea of Hartman’s Creek. It’s more convenient to hop in the car after work and still get there before the sun sets. There’s Kettle Moraine–Northern Unit, but I’m unsure of the terrain, etc.

As for picnics, we want to host one with Tenner next year. Bairds Creek is an ideal location for temporary caches up here. We are, however, unsure of the prime time to do it, and we want to avoid the WGA picnic. We’re thinking July…

    it figures.

other than the dells event, the only camping i got in this year was at hartman creek. i’ve already DONE a bunch of those caches!

Buuut–as always, there are more caches one desires to to than one can fit into a trip. So hey, i could easily do this one a second time!

i also wouldn’t mind doing a campout in the la croix area or bayfield. i havent been to either of those places in years!
