Although we’re not sure what the exact requirements are, we do know they make clamp-on lights that attach to the edge of the cockpit. We’ve seen kayaks out at night that only displayed a single white light, but it would be a good idea to check if any others are needed.

From Wisconsin DNR boating regulations: “Every boat propelled by muscular power and every sailboat not equipped with a motor, when under way at any time from sunset to sunrise, shall carry ready at hand a lantern or flashlight showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to avoid collision.”

I carry a waterproof flashlight and attach it to the front deck. I also have marine grade reflective tape running the length of my kayak on both sides, as well as reflective tape on both sides of both paddle blades and reflective areas on my PFD. I would not recommend using red/green lights because it’s simply extra gear to carry (and possibly fail) and you might get mistaken for a power boat, which means an oncoming boater may not be as inclined to avoid you. And never activate a strobe light unless you’re signaling an emergency situation.
