I am helping a Chicago man who is making plans to circumnavigate Lake Michigan this coming summer- in a kayak.
He will be making camp each night every 15-30 miles along his route. The Milwaukee area and suburbs presents a great challenge when it comes to locating a suitable campsite near the waterfront.

I am hoping that someone in our membership might have knowledge of/access to property on or near the lake in the areas around Shorewood to Brown Deer. Camping in someone’s back yard is not out of the question if they are on or very near the lake. We would like to secure permission in advance, as it sure beats knocking on doors when one is cold, wet, and tired after paddling all day.

Any help you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated.

To make this post suitable for the geocaching forums, some coordinates would be great too.

I don’t know the area you are referring to, thus would need more info.

If you were to take Brown Deer Rd as far east as you could possibly take it, you would get to the entrance of the Schlitz Audubon Center. I’m not sure if they have camping facilities there or if they even allow for it, but under the circumstances, they just might. May be worth contacting them since they are directly on Lake Michigan. One website for them is http://www.schlitzauduboncenter.com and they even had a private session on geocaching there recently.

Thanks Brkster, I have sent them info and the request and hope they are willing to help. Would you say there is a suitable spot to land a kayak and camp here?

Not really sure, since it’s been years since I had been to the nature center and I have never seen the beach area itself, but I know that it is due north of Doctor’s Park, where Bird on a Wire-St.Louis is located as well as one of the new 007 series caches. I know that there’s a beach area at Doctor’s Park to get out of the water at.
