Sorry, NSLP, your post does not seem to meet the “non commercial” requirement. It has been moved to the Board of Directors forum for further review. If the board determines it is suitable for our forums, it will be returned [Probably to the For Sale forum]. ~tb

In deep thought on the subject here….(staying warm)

I feel that if a known WI cacher makes something geocaching related on his or her own dime, and would like to offer it for sale, it should be allowed in the “for sale” forum.

At what point something becomes “commercial” is normally obvious, but not always.

    Hang tight Cathunter…

A special meeting of the board has been called to deal with this important issue facing our organization. We don’t take matters like this lightly. We’ve managed to find a neutral meeting place for the board to convene in closed session tomorrow at 9am to discuss this matter. After testimony from all involved, including teleconferencing and VOIP relay with our webmasters, we will cast a secret ballot to determine the outcome of this debacle, thus setting precedent for all future solicitations on these forums.

(OK, we’re holding our annual meeting tomorrow and I’ll be sure to mention it if Beast doesn’t)

Not sure what this was about because I was out most of the day yesterday, but…here’s a link about something geo-related and it WAS allowed: http://www.wi-geocaching.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/000063.html

I agree with Cathunter that these items should be allowed on the forums. Let those reading the threads decide whether or not they want to buy them.

Oh…and didn’t we all recently see a thread about some commercial WI Geocoins? I don’t remember anyone arguing about selling them on here.

Hey, thats ok. I understand. I didn’t fund it with my own dimes, so it would likely be considered a commercial post.

How about a posting that just says that the information about the coin is over on the GC forums? would that be acceptable, even if it was a fully commercial coin? maybe a link to the GC forum topic? I wasn’t sure if was an annoucment or a for sale since I wasn’t directly selling it, more announcing it?

But I understand if it is not allowed.

You actually read the geocaching.com forums?!

    You’re Fired!

I didn’t see the original post, only the subject line. I would rather not see anything offered for sale here unless it was funded and administered by a known member. (Along with being somewhat geocaching related, of course)

It would be nice to know what the heck you guys are even talking about. Was it geocaching related, made by NSLP, what? Either it was posted and moved so quickly or I don’t remember reading it.

In my mind there is a big difference between

    1. “Hey I found something really cool that I think my fellow geocachers would be interested in so I am going post to share it”

    and

    2. “Hey I have these really cool things that I or a friend of mine makes, so you all should buy one” followed by a few bumps to be a good salesman.

If it is geocaching related, I don’t see a problem passing it along. If not geocaching related, then fine, it doesn’t belong. Nor do we need to be bombarded to buy a product.

If someone can’t forward on a good or cool product, software, collectable, etc. having to do with geocaching, then we should be done talking about Garmins, Magellans, GSAK and the like.

It will be interesting to see what the board comes up with.

First off, there is a big difference in posting that “XYZ GPS units are on sale at Gander Mountain this week” VS. offering something for private sale.

    There is a grey area-
We don’t want a bunch of posts from people trying to sell things in order to make a profit. For example it would be wrong for me to use the WGA forums to advertise my home business products in an effort to entice people to buy stuff from me. That would be a commercial post.

If I had a GPS that I wanted to offer for private sale to WGA members, that wouldn’t be considered a commercial post. But- what if I had six….or ten….or 50?

If I had 200 ammo cans that I wanted to sell to WGA members, how does that fit?
What if I offered 10% of the profits to the WGA? Would that make it ok?

How about if I posted a link to my website, where I am selling alternative styles of WI Geocoins?

It seems to me that the original intention was to post individual items offered for private sale between members. Going beyond that was condidered a “commercial” post and removed from the boards.

The “offending” (term used very lightly) post can now be found HERE in the For Sale Forums.

Our knock down, drag out, closed door meeting to resolve this pressing issue facing our fine group was rather intense; but we came to an amicable compromise.

    OK then…

Is there a policy that might cover situations like those that I have posted, or is the WGA going to have a meeting every time a new “potentially commercial” post comes up?

You’re welcome! Those things are pretty cool for people in need! Bob and I just gave one of our GPSR’s to his sister. She too will most likely be ordering one soon.

I will make a note to use the For Sale forums for any future announcements, unless it is determined that such posts should not be posted in the future.

    By the way…
where is the info on what sorts of messages are permitted? I looked for a ‘guidelines’ type link but didn’t see one. Though I did see that according the FAQ the Announcements forum is just for Moderators and Admin’s posting messages, and that no replies are allowed.
