http://www.opencaching.us
http://www.opencaching.comI’ve noticed that .com has quite a few caches listed while .us still has relatively few. Just wondering why you are drawn to one site or the other.
When .us went live, there was a lot of resentment and hate. A lot of people voiced how they thought it was pointless.
Yet when .com went live, there was very little talk one way or the other.
Is it more appealing simply from a visual standpoint?
Inquiring minds want to know.
12/13/2010 at 10:59 pm #1940289Not sure…..maybe cross-listing is easier?
12/13/2010 at 11:09 pm #1940290honestly, I thought they were being used to reference the same site. At this time have I no interest in another caching site so for the most part just breezed over the forum postings regarding them here and figured it was just people getting confused in the dot-whatever’s (.com/edu/gov/us/it/tv/etc)
12/13/2010 at 11:14 pm #1940291The dot com site you can transfer caches over from GC. As for the oc site. , I think is cuz OC is out side the mainstream of dot com’s and people are not use to it.
12/13/2010 at 11:18 pm #1940292The dot com site does not allow for virtuals. The dot us does.
Both are easy to list to. I have listed a few caches to both. The dot us
site is my preferred one. Just my two cents worth.12/14/2010 at 1:33 am #1940293I just cross listed on .us just too see how it would go. Very easy and straight forward. A great experience so far. Just not too many caches on there. Closest one to me is still about an hour drive away. But its fun to dabble with the new kids on the block. Why not?
12/14/2010 at 1:37 am #1940294I’m with goirish, I checked it out. Unfortunately, at this time there is 1 cache within 50 miles and it is in the Dells which is like 49.5 miles as the crow flies. I might try to get some of these if I’m in the area where caches are already. I do like that .us allows for virtual caches
12/14/2010 at 2:28 am #1940295I listed one on .com just to kick the wheels. I suppose it attracted me because of being back by Garmin and I wanted to see how they did as to me personally it is the only legititmate contender to GC as they have the financial power and the CAPABILITY to attract people to their site. After playing with it and seeing some of the features, I think the .us site has way more types to chase (some I shake my head at) and probably has the edge actually being a better site at the moment. The .com one.. well let’s just say I listed probably the one and only cache I will list there as it just doesn’t impress me and having listened to podcasts with the Garmin folks has even turned me off even more as it just seems to be too commercially driven.
My unimportant thoughts on the future: .com will be tweaked and have way more listed than .us only because of the Garmin tie in but will never attract a strong following as much as GC has.
.us will remain and slowly grow, but will never take off and be a strong force due to Garmin financial backing of .com, but .us will cultivate a strong following of the anti establishment crowd.
GC will remain dominant and will take the best features of the OC caches and keep the folks that keep the lights on happy. I think even though GC has alienated folks that having options available to folks will hopefully spur GC to finally get the momentum going.
Now that was just my thoughts, probably what will happen is more like a Sears type mentality will develop where they ignored the attack by Walmart until all of a sudden it was too late and they cease to be a marketplace force. -
