I realize that everyone is into geocaching for different reasons but lets talk Multi-caches. Most are much harder then traditional, I hide it – you find it, caches.

I did a bit of math tonight and here is what I came up with:

% of total caches that were multi’s

    CCCooperAgency (3733 total) – 5.2% Multi’s
    BruceS (3403 total) – 8.5% Multi’s
    The Lil Otter (2297 total) – 10.0% Multi’s

Yes this shows to me that Otter is out for the cache not just the numbers.

    Of course there is always:

    J. Thorson (800 total) – 19.7% Multi’s

    or how about the Cached-22s – 100% Multi’s

I weigh in at 16.0% on the multi scale myself.

Of Course all of this means nothing but its cold out and statistics are fun (as the Beast will tell you).

Hey I think I will go out and do some Multi’s tomorrow .

Going after multis is a toss-up for me. Since they take longer, I may devote special time for ones that may take awhile. Then there’s days like last Saturday when I was going more for trying to capture some of the SoM caches. I deliberately passed on two multis that were nearby because in the time it would have taken me to find them, I could have done 3-4 traditionals.

I know you didn’t mean to disparage all “traditional” caches as being easy. Aren’t ALL caches based on the “I hide it, you find it” principle? Some of us prefer 4 and 5 star cache hikes in scenic areas to “traditional” walk-around-the-playground multi-caches.

I’m at 10.6% myself. I don’t even care whether something is a regular, a multi, a virtual, or something much rarer. It’s there so i gotta go look for it! I have found myself dreading the micros with all the leaves on the ground right now, but i still make an attempt at them.

What I think would be another interesting statistic is the percentages of each type of cache you’ve PLACED. so far, mine break down like this:

      Traditional caches: 8 (4 regular, 4 micro)
      Multi-caches: 3
      Virtual caches: 1
      Letterbox hybrids: 1
      Event caches: 2
      Mystery caches: 1
      Webcam caches: 1

I like variety. Sometimes I’m in the mood for a few easy finds, but there are days i set aside a few hours for a single hard find. The single hard finds are sometimes much more satisfying.

Uh oh.. I can see this one heating up a mile away… Flaming folder here we come…

I’ll be like “Lil” from Survivor and be fence sitter on this one…

Ken brings up a valid point on the level of difficulty.

We have a “measly” 8% multicaches.. but I can attest to the fact that those 39 were well earned. For example, Mr. Elver’s Cache in Madison will literally take you 1 1/2 days; Nature Hill Odyssey outside Oconomowoc is a whopping 14 legs!!!

Playing Devil’s Advocate…I wouldn’t necessarily automatically put more weight in to multi’s as some multis are “just” more work for an “easy” find. IMHO multis can be easier or harder than traditionals depending on the number of legs and distance to each.

Sometimes we feel like doing 27 caches (1/2’s) or sometimes four 3/3 or 4/4 single-leg caches are just as satisfying.

By the way, since we’re skirting around the issue: if one were to REALLY keep track and score all of this in a competition, one would keep track of each leg in a multi and difficulty rating in any cache. That person would also gain credit for their caches being found; which would also be weighted accordingly to their difficulty and type. (but it’s not about the numbers! statistics are fun!)

Just my $.04 save it or spend it…

15.8% of our finds were multi-caches. The hardest one was the The Three Bad Ribs cache at Rib Mountain.

Thank you wzbt03 for tossing me in the limelight (grins)

Actually many of my multi caches are out of respect for the area I wished to highlight/showoff.. most know that I love historical caches.. and placing a cache right at the ‘cool’ spot just doesn’t sit well with me.. I’ve traveled so much and saw so many ‘ground zero’ places worned down in a hunt or just normal foot traffic.. that I wished not to have our geocaching hunters disturb the area that way.. so I off-set them many times to a safer spot that allows a bit of fun.

Don’t get me wrong.. I do have some nice multi caches as well that will take hours to do.. but it’s all about the area to me and the reason for coming.

oooo000PS.. I just realized that you were talking about “found” caches.. not placed ones (blush) I guess now is when my coffee finally kicked in..

before my PDA.. when I travel in-state.. I printed all caches here.. and out-of-state was more troublesome.. but now armed with my PDA I can be challenged by any cache along the way.. multi’s are enjoyable and now easier for me to tackle with the right setup.

I actually have just one true multicache. And as all the finders know, it’s a doozy, insome cases taking months from start to finish!

My other two “multis” involve a large time investment, as well as some distance, so to reward finders, I have made each stage a separate cache that can be logged. This way, you can spread the hunt over multiple days and not obligated to spend a day on a long cache for just a single find.

I spent many hours, days and traveling before I finished Dave’s Gee, I’m a tree. ”Who Wants to Play Clue?” is eleven caches in one and took me several weeks of poking around to finish it.

If you are into numbers, you will feel cheated by multi’s. I know I did for a while until I changed my philosophy about the experience. Numbers are OK. Just don’t let it become an obsession and ruin the total experience of being in the outdoors and enjoying the technology.
