Question….. Would any teams that own a Garmin Oregon or Colorado or another GPSr device that can do Wherigo caches be willing to participate in a team Wherigo activity on Friday the 13th evening of the event?

To be honest this might be tough to do as there are going to potentially be upwards of 800 people in the area and there could be hundreds of folks there Friday night interested in the Wherigo. With limited GPS units and at an hour to run the program you might run into problems. Also getting a working Wherigo up and running is really hard just look at the logs for the one up in Hudson…. GC23AMC. After the event (where I suspect there was inside information about locations given out), it was one crashing cartridge after another with many folks unable to run the program.

I think setting one up would be awesome but trying to organize groups to do it might be problematic….might be best to let folks team up on their own…if people have an interest they will find a way.

LB7 is right on all counts here.

The Hudson Whereigo crashed for everyone on the day of the event. It has now been repaired though.

People who are interested, will find their own help, which is what happened in Hudson, several ad hoc groups going out and getting it.

Personally, I would be happy to take a few people along. I do think if groups get too big it gets to more of a hassle than fun though.

Are there plans for “bonus” caches this year? For example, water caches, night caches, and the like?

I enjoy the new format this year, however, not thrilled with only getting 5 tickets when I find all fifty again. 🙁 (my only complaint) Keep up the great work!!

Again, my personal plug is to try and have as many stamps in the caches as you can, I think to much “word sharing” went on last year. Ok, I will get off my soap box. I LOVE THIS EVENT!

Yes, I believe there are plans for more challenging water caches this year.

Yes, I plan to hide one night cache. I’m not sure if anyone else will.

There is a plan for a Wherigo (if I can figure out how to use the builder).

Yes, this was a long-discussed debate. The committee’s reasoning for this change is that there is a greater number of teams planning to attend, and a longer time to find the caches. Almost everyone has the potential to find all 50. There’s only so much room in the ticket barrel. Also, with hundreds and hundreds of teams, it’s simply easier and less time-consuming for our volunteers to hand out tickets in the afternoon as people return before the raffle. Also, it takes away some of the “competition/race” mindset to portray a more overall friendly event.

Yes, everyone on the committee agrees with you. We try to have the majority of caches be small or regular size to accommodate stamps, but we also think it’s important to give cachers variety in both cache size and difficulty, and so certain micros or creative caches are the exception to the rule (like Stick-y Situation last year).

I would like to add, that last year Anne posted odds on winning with actually less tickets someplace. I don’t have time to search for it right now, but be assured your odds of winning are actually greater with us doing it this way. 😀

Actually, Laurell, I’m pretty sure my calculations were flawed. 😳 And it was based on the average cacher instead of the 50-cache super-cacher. But in any case, it will be a fun weekend regardless. 😀

Pharmgirl is right on, if you found all fifty caches last year, you had better odds of winning then if you get only five even though the number of tickets is small. If most people get five tickets this year, it will be like everyone finding fifty caches last year, which didn’t happen. I just wanted to speak my peace. Whatever you guys do will be great! I love the cache bash. Thanks for all of the work you put into hosting the event.

Funny thing, If you go to the Cache Bash Expecting to win a door prize, You might be in this for the wrong reasons.

I wouldn’t say I am in it for the wrong reasons, but I think that prizes are something that brings people in. Or else, why would it be part of the name of the publicized event. The $1000 Cache Ba$$$h, just saying. Definitely not my major reason for going, but a reward is a reward.

As previously stated by pharmgirl, there was much discussion over that. And this is why there are committees, they can do the leg work, make the descions. And I support their descion, just maybe not agree with it. But the reasoning was explained every well.

I will be happy to get my 5 tickets this year. I didn’t win anything last year, but maybe this is the year. I was just stating my opinion.

Clarification: I meant “you” as a general, not a personal.

there are folks who won’t go to events if there is nothing to be “potentially” gained. The “what’s in it for me” gene is strong in some folks.

      (no personal attack meant)

I would request that if there will be water caches either as the part of the main 50 or as additional (bonus) caches that there be some kind of advance notice here or on the cache page…particularly if swimwear or a boat will be required to attempt them.

I am one of the persons who will be hiding water caches and the plan right now is to hide them by boat and they will only be accessible by boat. This means that they will all be 5 terrain. We plan on hiding them so there will be no way to get to them by land.

GLUG, ha! Thanks Mr. G – they oughta be great! 😀 Oh and I am no mathematician – that is why I can’t do puzzle caches to save myself so sorry about the ticket thingy. But either way, you will still have a good time and may walk home with a prize to boot. 😳 😛 The best prize will be to see everyone together again and hopefully have great weather and good fun with our families and friends! Looking forward to seeing everybody! 😀

What’s in it for me? A mega (status) event icon! 😀 Plus those that registered early received a “goodie” bag. 8) Also, some of the “top” cache 😉 oops cash award winners didn’t find all 50 caches and their winning ticket was pulled 😆 Tami
Not to mention, last year we had the number one geocacher in the world attend, 😛 this year we have the number two geocaching team in the world attending. 😮

Don’t forget the cacher from Kyrgyzstan. Aida experienced her 1st geocaching event after being in the states for only one week and was interviewed by the local paper. She came from a much farther place than California.
