Unless you like run ins with the local authority…2 days of geocaching, 2 run ins with the gendarme…
Friday – trying to get one of TBB’s Tools of The Trade – just putting WP1 back when Menasha’s finest stops by to ask me some questions… thought for sure that one was going to be a ticket.
Sunday – Go to TBB’s puzzle event at the fox river mall(fun, but short cuz of weather), figure I could pick up one or two right there… walking around some tree’s and I hear the wonderful notes of “Hey Sir – is there something I can help you with?” Unfortunately it was not a waitress wanting to take my drink order…
Nope…was mall security, after explaining it I got the OH Yeah and deer in the headlights look and he said have fun.
Going to stick to those more rural caches for a while I think.
02/26/2007 at 10:46 am #1770847I had a run in with the Hudson police this weekend as well. As I exited the woods I walked up to his cruiser only to hear my name and city announced over the radio. He was just running my plates to see who I was when he saw my car and thought I might “Be stuck.” I told him to hang out for a minute or two and I just may be….In all the visit from Officer Friendly was uneventful and as it turned out I was breaking no laws 😈
02/26/2007 at 2:21 pm #1770848At least you were able to succinctly explain what you were doing and they didn’t freak out.
02/26/2007 at 5:07 pm #1770849RSplash, maybe you should stop dressing like a terrorist when you geocache in the mall!
Seriously, if you cache in the city (or along highways), you will sooner or later get questioned by the police. Usually they are having a slow day (or else they wouldn’t have time to bother with some kook in camo examining a pine tree), so I have had luck recruiting them to help with the search.
On the other hand, I would say that caches placed on private property (like shopping malls and parking lots) have a better than even chance of being placed without permission. I tend to NOT undertake extended searches for these to avoid drawing attention to the situation. (It also helps to leave the camo, backpack, waders, hiking stick, 4-D-Cell flashlight, and machete in the car when searching in a parking lot, just my opinion.)
02/26/2007 at 5:12 pm #1770850yah I suppose, the gilbert brown sized guy in a bright red sweatshirt during a “blizzard” probably looked a little odd 😛

Hey, I wasn’t even with you on that one!
02/27/2007 at 6:56 pm #1770852Was out with BQ and benny7210 one day in the Kimberly/Appleton area and had a cache parked next to a co. sheriff or was the sheriff parked next to it??!! LOL Anyway.. he saw us, just smiled and opened his window. BQ goes over and tells him we are Caching and if he had ever heard of it. He said “Yes…but didn’t realize there was one here” So…at least we had a good experience. Chatted with him on some Techie stuff then we all went on our way. I wanted to get a pic with me and BQ against the patrol car. He laughed and said “Oh that’s JUST what I need going across the internet…’Co. Sheriff harasses Geocachers’ LOL”
02/28/2007 at 1:34 am #1770853From tonight’s Appleton Post Crescent, Police Blotter section:
“Town of Menasha
(dated) Feb. 18Suspicious person: A woman reported seeing a man hanging around in Wittman Park “acting Rambo-like.” Now, she said there was another man coming and going and looking up in the trees for something. Police determined they were participants in an online scavenger hunt called “Geocaching.”
Is this talking about the incident that started this thread? Or were there several in the Fox Valley recently?
Look at all the new and unique experiences we have due to this gtreat hobby of ours!

That was Team Bear Bear that got called on this one. If the man was Chris I’d love to him be rambolike. Better yet I’d love to see Robin go Rambo.
02/28/2007 at 3:59 am #1770855No, that was definitely not me.
02/28/2007 at 4:52 am #1770856oops
02/28/2007 at 4:54 am #1770857o.k. O.K.!!! Not sure what is going on here.
RSplash40 is at Team Bear Bear’s “Tools of a Trade – Geocaching” cache and is questioned by police. I think MARC & Miata were questioned here as well.
Then RSplash40 goes to Team Bear Bear’s puzzle event and is questioned by mall security (but at least he is not hunting a cache of ours). Of course, mall security was about to throw us out of the food court because they closed the mall early due to the weather.
Then Bunny Fu answers back that she and the group she is caching with is questioned – her response in this thread is suspiciously similar to the log written in her log for our “Bear Bear’s Nest Egg” cache.
THEN Gram&Gramps quotes the Post Crescent’s police blotter reciting and incident in Wittman park where Robin & I are questioned by police because we look “suspicious” UGH! Not sure if I looked “rambolike” or if it looked like I was rolling around a lot (We were doing cache maintenance, then looking for a new cache there). The officer was very nice and accepted our explanation, took a few notes and laughed about it. We gave him a coaching I.D. sticker and explained the “game” to him. He was very understanding.
We’ve only been doing this for 11 months, maybe we should retire before we get locked up.
I’m going to have a beer beer.
Team Bear Bear (Chris)

As far a rambo…I’d like to see that as well. Chris dressed as rambo with a beer in hand.
Rsplash we will still cache with you anytime!
