Very well written and even prophetic in places. It is amazing how much geocaching has changed and yet how much it has stayed the same. I was able to find Pike Powder Hike last weekend and it is cool to know a bit more about its history. Thanks for sharing the article!

I agree with Amita17, very well written.

I’d love to know more of the history of the WGA and what are the 3 caches that were published before Powder Pike Hike? After doing a few of the historical caches out in Oregon, it really got me interested in how geocaching caught on in Wisconsin and how the WGA was formed.

I’ll try to do some of my own research, but if anyone has GC numbers, that would be helpful.

        Thanks for sharing!

Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors.

I agree with the above and would also be interested in knowing…

GC253 – Pookie’s Stash is one of the 2 caches that predate Pike Powder Hike. It did not event last a year. 🙁
GC266 – Geocache is another one of the three

Have not found the other one, as it looks as if Ken did not find/log it.

I really enjoyed the post. So much of what was said is what I really enjoy about geocaching.

The only thing I think I enjoy a little more is looking back at the early logs of finders from long ago and reading what they said, and then wondering where they went.

        Thanks!

The other one was hidden south of Sheboygan and listed on geocaching.com but it was never found by anyone and was archived not long afterwards.

I haven’t gone anywhere… except all the places that geocaching has taken me over the years. 😀 In addition to serving as one of the WGA founders and the first president of the WGA, and then later serving as VP and secretary, I have been a reviewer for Geocaching.com for more than nine years (as IowaAdmin). Check out my reviewer blog at http://iowaadmin.blogspot.com. I’m still out there finding geocaches and maintaining my caches (I.D. is kbraband), including Pike Powder Hike. When my wife and I cache together, we use the team name active2gether. Wish I could attend the picnic at Pike Lake this weekend but I have an annual commitment to serve as one of the lead safety kayakers for the swim portion of the Wisconsin Iron Man race in Madison.

So even some of the early ones had issues also. I did not check, but I wonder if there are caches at those sites today?

I’m glad to see that Ken and Jeremy among other ‘old-timers’ are still going strong. Good to know you can avoid burning out and keep having fun! Thanks for sharing the article, good reads. We enjoyed finding Pike Powder Hike last year at the Ba$h when the wife was 41 weeks pregnant, even that hike wouldn’t get the lil hippie out 🙂

Thanks for sharing. I have read many of your posts. Yet there are still many out there that placed wonderful caches many years ago that were adopted and life happened to them. I hope someday they might reappear in logs.
