I am sure this has been covered previously, but what is the oldest active (not virtual) cache in Wisconsin?
For some reason somewhere in Door County comes to mind, but I am not quite sure about that.
Thanks for your response in advance.
09/24/2008 at 5:28 pm #1896381Wisconsin’s oldest active Geocache is Pike Powder Hike.
GC3B109/24/2008 at 5:41 pm #1896382Thanks!
I also see the bookmark link for oldest by state.
Nice.
Maybe the second oldest is in Door County?
Anyway, we are headed to DC way in a few weeks. Thanks for the prompt reply.

09/24/2008 at 11:28 pm #1896383On the right hand side of the GC.com page is this:
Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates (filter out finds)
List newest in Wisconsin
click on List Newest in wisconsin and go to the last page for the oldest active caches.
10/22/2008 at 3:10 am #1896384OK. Great, thanks for the help. Pike Powder Hike (GC3B1) dates to 3/2/2001.
We just completed the last two (Wisconsin) DeLorme (Challenge) pages (81 and 81 A) up in Door County. 😆
Interestingly enough we came across what perhaps could be (maybe) the second Oldest cache in Wisconsin up in Door County.
It’s called Door County Cache (GC4C4) which dates to 3/17/2001.
We found GC4C4 which is kinda neat as it goes back to March of 2001 only 15 days younger than GC3B1.Thanks.

Interesting…. Door County Cache (GC4C4) was first found April 4th 2001 and the Pike Powder Hike (GC3B1) was first found March 4th 2001…..seems almost like a toss-up…
10/22/2008 at 1:44 pm #1896386Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….
My answer was going to be Marc 5 digits. Then I realized it was asking for oldest cache… not cacher! 😆

Wait, (this is Kinda of Off Topic) here a little bit because (Guards have been posted……) but we might be considering the oldest Cartographer??
Or, some kind of a Gerrymander.
Er, no?
10/23/2008 at 2:16 pm #1896389Yes, my Pike Powder Hike (GC3B1) is the oldest cache in Wisconsin.
A semantics note: I, too, used to call it the oldest “active” cache in Wisconsin (because there was one cache listed before Pike Powder Hike that was never found. It has been archived for many years). However, I recently edited the description for Pike Powder Hike to remove the word “active” because it’s not necessary. It’s the oldest cache in the state. Period.
Think about it — If someone is the oldest person in Wisconsin, you don’t call them the oldest “live” person in Wisconsin. When that person dies, the person who was second-oldest becomes the oldest person in Wisconsin, not the oldest “live” person in Wisconsin. The same holds true for the oldest house in Wisconsin. If it burns down or is otherwise demolished, it is no longer the oldest house in Wisconsin. It may have been the “first” house in Wisconsin, but it is no longer the oldest house in Wisconsin.
Just two cents from a writer/editor. 😀
10/24/2008 at 2:17 am #1896390Just check out the GC# to get your answer.
GC3_ _ _ is older than GC4_ _ _.tami
10/24/2008 at 3:53 am #1896391Maybe back then, but I think the GC number is assigned when you submit the cache for the first time. That doesn’t mean it is published then, so a later date might be on it.
We put out our first caches this spring, but we fiddled around with a cache page for quite a bit, then waited for permission, etc., so our GC1A_ _ _ cache was put out later than our GC1B_ _ _ cache that we put together and got published quicker.

I agree, Ken, plus active is technically not correct. You could temporarily disable your cache to replace the container, and it would still be the oldest cache, but not active. It would be the oldest “not archived” cache, but that isn’t exactly comfortable to say.
