I have been noticing some caches with really short GC numbers and it got me wondering, what is the oldest cache in the state thats still active? what was the first cache in the state?

If you intend to seek it, the direct approach is more difficult than following the trail to the top of the hill.

02/05/2006 at 4:54 am #1741173First cache in the state was near Sheboygan. Nobody ever found it! I think there should be a big fat ammo box put there as sort of a memorial!

I was going to look for that cache when I first discovered geocaching in early Feb. 2001, but I didn’t because someone else had posted they couldn’t find it. Instead, I had to find my first cache in the Chicago area ( Beverly )because that was the closest geocache to me. Later that summer I emailed Jeremy to let him know that the Sheboygan cache wasn’t there. Back then there was no “Should be archived” type of posting. Jeremy was reviewing all caches then.
By the way, here’s a list of first caches in each state you may be interested in.

02/05/2006 at 6:28 pm #1741176Last Summer, I visited the spot in Sheboygan of the first cache placement. Kind of a religious experience… OK maybe not but it was pretty cool. I believe I found the tree that is referred to in the posting, although an area can change alot in five years. It is a really nice area and a short quiet hike to the “cache”.

all the post here have been great! very interesting that jeremy Irish was the one to archive that listing. also note if you click the owner profile for that cache that it also links to jeremy….. hmm maybe he is the one who placed it?
If Im ever in the area I will for sure do Pike Powder Hike, never been to the park but looks like a cool place. anyone know of any other caches that have been around for awhile feel free to share.

The site was adopted and re-designed by Jeremy in August of 2000. Any data prior to that on geocaching.com must have been imported from Mike Teauge’s original database. Interestingly enough, he still occasionally posts on the USENET newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav, which is where geocaching actually started.

To clarify, Mike Teague never had this cache in a database, Russ. The original owner did not respond when Jeremy wrote to him, so Jeremy assumed ownership of it and archived it.
