Hello fellow cachers. I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is one of the owners of onmilwaukee.com. We started discussing what we had been up to lately, and I opened his eyes to geocaching. He had heard about the sport on NPR, but didn’t realize there was any activity in Wisconsin, much less Milwaukee. He asked if he could have one of his editors call me later today or tommorrow to ask me questions about geocaching, because he really wants to do an article about it on the site. Does anyone have any pointers for me? I don’t want to say anythign that may hurt the sport (I don’t imagine I will..but you can never be too careful, right?)

02/26/2004 at 7:16 pm #1736598Please be sure to emphasize these points, which reporters sometimes miss:
– Caches are not buried
– They do not contain “treasure”
– The WGA and other geocaching organizations promote protection of the environment, including Cache In Trash Out02/26/2004 at 7:51 pm #1736599Jonathan,
Just keep your enthusiasm and I am sure you will do just fine. Explain that the real treasures here are the joy of discovery of beautiful and intreguing new places, of meeting people with similar interests and diverse backgrounds and of getting outdoors with friends and family.
Take your friend on a hunt or two and you will have him hooked.
Good luck, you have our confidence.

02/26/2004 at 10:27 pm #1736600I agree with the above advice…
and would add that it is a great family activity…rather than zoning out in front of the TV families are able to spend some quality time outdoors! (just think of the environmental passion that we are modeling to our Jr. Geocachers for the love of the outdoors)

03/03/2004 at 3:40 pm #1736601I did the interview. She had done some research on geocaching already, but here’s what we talked about:
– Very Family Friendly, but couples and singles are very common in the sport too.
– WGA approving caches to make sure the sport stays safe and that caches are placed appropriately and according to guidelines.
– Event Caches are the place to be for new and veteran geocachers (plugged the geo-caching clinic at deerfield and our breakfast).
– Interesting things we’ve found or placed in caches? I talked about Cache in, Trash out, since we love helping keep our parks clean.
– Talked about our Garmin Rinos and our Garmin eTrex (sorry Magellen).
– Let her know that Ginger Snap (Ava) has been caching 6 months, and that she is 7 months old.
-Talked about what Travel Bugs were
-Plugged http://www.wi-geocaching.com as a great resource for someone who wants to start caching. She said she will call me with any other questions, and that the article will be running in the next week or two.
