That smarts….. Wunder what will happen with the police?? Give me chills just thinking about that one.!
11/03/2004 at 10:49 pm #1747915Although this could happen to any cache, I tend to believe that good painting and labeling is an absolute MUST for an ammo can. It may have prevented this and other similiar situations.
The real problem here is that local law enforcement could bill the cache owner for the entire cost of operations the police and bomb squad ensued because of the event. This adds up to a couple thousand dollars or more real quick, depending on what exactly took place.
Makes for a pretty expensive hobby.
11/03/2004 at 11:47 pm #1747916The first thing I thought was: Did the cache owner have permission to place this cache? This goes a long way to prevent this type of problem.
11/04/2004 at 12:10 am #1747917I’m trying to think about the labeling on this cache as we were the last ones to find it… Might have a picture on the camera, I’ll have to look. I can see how now that the leaves have fallen the cache could be spoted easier. The area where it was located looked like it got alot of foot traffic, I assumed by local kids. Did this make news in any of the local news papers?

of The Cacheseekers11/04/2004 at 12:21 am #1747918We only took one picture of it when we found it. It does stick out of a stump a litte bit, or I should say did. For those who would like to see it:

What are the chances of a muggle or even the police getting ahold of a land manager before calling in the bomb squad? In my experience, the property owner is the last to know when something happens.
Permission might save some grief, but only after the fact.

(but, in all seriousness, I think the WGA needs to speak with Cottage Grove Police Department, or whatever, in regards to this situation.)
11/04/2004 at 4:24 am #1747921As I see many ammo cans in the woods, I think they should not remain the army green. We spray paint our ammo cans before using them, and they hopefully become more user friendly when found by the unsuspecting.

11/04/2004 at 3:05 pm #1747923** My 2 cents **
I would never consider placing an ammo can without the big Geocaching sticker that you buy via GroundSpeak. I love finding ammo can caches, they are typically in better shape and have more room for stuff than most plastic containers … HOWEVER, I’ve yet to use 1 of the 3 ammo cans I originally bought, even though I have 11 caches hidden … I just personally feel better when they are placed in spots where almost no one will accidentily find one … I can totally see how they would make a non-cacher nervous if they found one.11/04/2004 at 3:42 pm #1747924A question for the masses:
Is there a consensus on whether it would be wise to approach the local PD and offer some info on geocaching. Perhaps if a captain was to disperse a memo to officers, and to the bomb squad in particular, on how to spot a geocache it might help. Perhaps they might even be inclined to check gc.com to see if there is a cache located at that spot before it is treated with suspicion.
Now, please understand that I fully agree with everything posted above. Plastic see-through containers make the contents obvious. Geocaching stickers help identify an ammo can, etc. Those are all excellent starting points.
But perhaps a little conversation with our local constabulary might be the extra step needed (?)11/04/2004 at 4:21 pm #1747925Dang! This one was on our to-do list!
11/04/2004 at 4:37 pm #1747926Painted Ammobox?
Ah but what is in the color?
An ammobox in any other color
is yet an ammobox.
an ammobox is an ammobox is an ammobox.paraphrased from a very early geocacher…
~tb11/04/2004 at 4:45 pm #1747927OuttaHand I was thinking the same thing. To go educate the local police about geocaching and to let them know were there are caches in the area.
