It would be pretty tough to make a difference in the law enforcement community, seeing that there are caches in every city and every county in the state.

A suspicious package is a suspicious package, regardless of what it looks like. They will all be treated as if they were potentially harmful.

A few weeks ago in Racine, EOD blew up an electric typewriter that was spotted in the parking lot of Home Depot. Another good use of tax dollars.

ROTFLOL about the electric typewriter! (I bet some of those officers were young enough to have never seen an electric typewriter before! Hee hee!)

I agree with the difficulty of making a difference with law enforcement in the state. Our county’s police force numbers over 300 alone…. That doesn’t even include local PDs.

And in this “post 9/11” day and age, law enforcement (and the public as well) is just more wary of suspicious looking items that look out of place. Not that any terrorist would want to blow up Cottage Grove mind you, but you never can be too careful sometimes. And a package that is labeled on the outside with GEOCACHING.COM might be more helpful to geomuggles. I know that in my pre-geocaching days, if I would’ve come across an ammo box in the woods, it would look suspicious to me…. And to answer Bec’s question, a tupperware would definitely look less suspicious to me. I would’ve thought the tupperware was a lost lunch or something, lol.

As others have stated at different levels … labeling I think has the main advantage of dis-alarming the “first contact muggler” … if that person figures out the container is ok, they will leave it alone (at best) or take it (at worst) and escalate the issue to involving the local police, who really don’t have an option of being non-concerned.

But more luck than anything, I happen to have gotten two sherrif deputies in my county into the sport … one a semi-active cacher, the other who works odd hours has not gotten out with us in the woods yet but is very excited at the prospect. Not that these two guys are always on duty to “calm a concern” but it doesn’t hurt.
