Oshkosh Area

We will be in the Oshkosh/ Butte Des Morts area this weekend (Dec. 16&17)and would like some suggestions of winter findable caches. We would like to incorporate our new snowshoes into the trip as well.

I’m not sure how far you want to snowshoe or how “winter friendly” the caches are but the Wiouwash trail has a number of caches available as well as the entire Winneconne/Butte Des Morts/ Oshkosh area. Some are PUZZLE caches and may take some research but should be well worth the effort.

*ta-dah* tooting my own horn…

I have a few in omro that are pretty easy grabs though snowshoes are probably not needed. The Omro Fitness Trail Series(6), The Last Splash, and there are 3 others in town.

If you go west past omro, there is a the Cedar Creek Multi(hope I get that right) depending on snowfall that one is on public land and you can snow shoe at least the first stage and depending on the route to the final its possible to shoe that as well. Nice trek through the woods the final might be rough to get to in winter though.

I would also check labrat’s id on gc.com, if he’s got some of his re-enabled I’ve been told they are nice jaunts and sound like they could be shoe’d.

There is 2 south/southwest of omro about 3-4 miles, one of which you can grab on a nice walk through a preserve. Pretty sure you can shoe that one though there are some fairly steep hills to traverse. The other is quick walk up and trade at a carp pond. That one is Waukau Creek Carp Trap or something like that, good one to keep the kids interested.

Continuing further SW of omro, there are 2 more on a preserve, the first is within 50 feet of parking, the 2nd you could shoe to, and probably would be wise to as the defined trail ends shortly after the first cache. The first one is in the trail of the serpent series.

There is 3 on a old railroad bed by…pearl6?.. further SW of omro/berlin area, its a snowmobile trail but at this time probably shoeable w/o worry of getting run over. Thats only a guess though.

I could keep going but that should get you started.

We did the Wiouwash Trail over Thanksgiving. Although I messed up and missed one of the caches, I do remember the one in Larsen is winter friendly and all the waypoints for Chamber of Secrets are at least 3 ft off the ground, the final is low though. Also Beam Me Up Scotty is winter friendly.

I believe they snowmobile on the trail, so snowshoes might not apply. Wild Rose isnt all the far away and from what I have read, some of Lab Rats caches might require snowshoes. You might want to try up there.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

We tackled some of the easier puzzle caches in the area on Sunday as well as a few traditionals we passed along the way. We highly recommend Big Sty Country (GCR81Q) to anyone who hasn’t found it yet. We had a really, really fun time with that one.

Today we found several along the Wiouwash Trail and the Friendship State Trail. Disappointingly, the snow on the trails was already pretty well packed from snowmobile traffic, so we abandoned the snowshoes and just walked the trails. But, we had them all to ourselves and were able to spend a nice Monday off work together.

And, as usual, there are plenty more to find, so we have plenty of reasons to head back…
