Typically my GPSrs are only used for two things – auto nav and caching (with the rare occasional hiking with no caching involved). Sunday I found another nifty use for it.
We were hunting for Xmas trees in Wild Rose. In the past, we’d find a TOI (Tree of Interest) but we’d want to keep looking around at other possibilities then come back to compare them. So we’d always have to get creative on marking the TOI and remembering how to get back to it after wandering in all sorts of directions. (Some past markers were scarfs and beverage containers.)
This year I got smart and used my Dakota to mark WPs for them. It made the whole process a breeze! Kinda weird though searching out pine trees without assaulting them while looking for a container inside.
Anyway, this made me wonder…other than the typical uses (hunting, hiking, boating, driving, caching) what other uses have you come up with for your GPSr?

12/06/2010 at 1:52 pm #1939527I’ve placed mine between the door and the jamb to keep the door open! ๐

Much better than marking the side of the boat! ๐
12/06/2010 at 1:55 pm #1939529Trekkin’ marks fishing spots, and we mark bed and breakfasts we see in our travels. They aren’t always listed in the main B and B sites, so it helps us later on if we’re trying to find one.
I like Jim’s creative usage!

12/06/2010 at 2:08 pm #1939532We’ve used ours for the Christmas tree hunt, too.
12/06/2010 at 3:39 pm #1939533Dang. My GPSr doesn’t work well in the basement, but I still managed to find 4 really nice trees down there. Couldn’t decide so each of the “girls” got one (wife, daughter 1, daughter 2, dog). ๐ ๐
My semi-caching related use – I harvest the track maps via mapsource and then when looking for locations to place, finals that might be near spots I’ve traveled in the past, etc. I then have these as reference material.
Non-Caching related – I’ve used the acreage function to measure a couple farm fields to calculate #’s of seed required.
12/06/2010 at 7:27 pm #1939534Marking and saving the coords. of a grave (site) in large cemetery’s. For visiting at a later date.
12/06/2010 at 7:32 pm #1939535I’ve used mine for marking old building foundations, telephone poles and property markers for the park rangers on Rock Island.
I use the sun/moon data quite a bit. It’s helpful when planning those observing sessions and need to know sun/moon rise/set times.
I also used mine quite a bit while in Vancouver BC to mark the bus/subway stations and nearby banks, gas stations, and grocery stores (especially those that carried Mtn Dew). The craziest use I had for my GPSr was marking all the off set locations used in the Stargate series I went too.
My son likes to use his to record his mileage on his bike.

I tried that once, but we never caught anything when we returned to the spot.

I’ve used mine to record where relatives are buried so I can put the info into my genealogy software.
I also used it to record my last 2 cruises. I made an AC power supply for it and placed it next to the window in the ship. Each night I saved the track. When I got home I dropped the tracks into Mapsource and Google Earth. I also marked some locations of interest.

12/06/2010 at 8:58 pm #1939538I used mine in a corn maze last year. It helped get me back to familiar spots, and I did get out, but I don’t think I used it to its full capabilities.
12/06/2010 at 11:25 pm #1939539I once took my old Lowrance H2O qwith me to Mexico where we were on a mission trip outside Juarez building a house. I marked it’s location so I could look it up in Google Earth. Funny thing is even after we built the house, it didn’t show up on Google Earth.
