      GCM9T2 Neet the Picketts again:

November 4 by Trudy & the beast (2015 found)

We opened the cache and found Alaskan GOLD! but that is not the the best part of this trip. The drive through the gently rolling hills of Green County is a treat in itself. But, today was extra special as we drew closer to the cache we saw a trail of thick black smoke rising from beyond the next hill. Burning trash, came to my mind. As we got closer we saw that it was a mini-bus abandoned in a field and set ablaze by who-knows-who. The Green County Sheriff was already there, so we felt little need to stop and render assistance.

Then, as we got to the peak of the next hill in the road, we spotted the Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department Truck hurrying toward us and their assignment now a mile or two behind us. They were giving us a special show today. The hose had come loose and was now bouncing along on the roadway behind it. It looked a lot like a giant red rodent scurrying along the road. It didn’t take the CVFD long to realize their dilema. They came to a stop and Keystone Cop fassion, four or six firemen jumped off the truck and reeled the hose in and proceeded on the fire.

They hadn’t noticed that the Nozzle had come off and was lying in the road a quarter mile further back. We retrieved the nozzle and made a hasty U-turn to return it to the FD. We were too late to prevent another motorist from interceeding in our pursuit. We were unable to catch-up with them and had no choice but to follow at a distance right out to the site of the fire. I held the Nozzle up through the sun roof and when the Sheriff spotted it, he waved us on as if we were a big part of the show. The fire captain thanked us and we went on find our cache.

The dialog between T&tb at the cache site revolved around the hose and nozzle and quickly reached the point where it could not be repeated on a family site such as this.

We left the gold where we found it. The experience was too rich to seek any reward. TFTC.
