Is it possible for out of staters to become members of Wisconsin Geocaching Association? Just wondering.

    I answered my own question.

But, what if an out of stater visits on of Wisconsin’s geocaches and would like to nominate it as a cache of the month?

    Or, participate in the forums?

Are they just out of luck?

I love it when I post to my own posts!

It appears to me that the geocaching associations which are linked to the Wisconsin Geocaching page, do not require that members live in their respective states.

I participate on the Chicagoland Geocaching Association forums and have participated in their events. I don’t see why they wouldn’t likewise be welcome here on our forums. I can understand, however, if official membership is limited to Wisconsin residents only.

Cheesehead Dave wins the prize for the correct answer. Anyone can register for the WGA forums. However, only Wisconsin residents can be WGA voting members, as per the bylaws ( http://wi-geocaching.com/bylaws.php? ) This was done so that when the WGA works with/negotiates/assists park officials, they can be assured that we represent Wisconsin taxpayers.

    Ohhhhhhhh!

Historically, anyone age 13 or older can register to participate in the forums. Under age 13 must submit parental permission in order to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Anyone can sign up to participate without ever becoming a WGA member. As you noted, WGA members are required to be residents of WI.

As a licensed state association, our numbers are a reflection of our strength. If our membership were made up of a portion of out-of-staters, the number of members would have little meaning when working to negotiate policy with governing agencies.

Does wga send an email reminder to register each year? I don’t remember my wga anniversary date.

To answer the questions about membership..

We had made an effort to validate residency but a few out-of-staters have slipped past us and they remain on our master roll but may not appear on the list that is available on our home page. [we know who you are ]

We have not sent out any e-mail reminders. Our only reminders to renew have been rather low-key posts on the forums. Our membership list is at 611 and of those, at least 1/3 expired during this year. If you are in doubt, please renew your membership.

To this point, the only advantage top being a member has been the right to vote. We have discussed member events, membership cards with associated merchant discounts, and e-mailings. These discussions have not come pass. The Board of Directors would welcome any ideas to promote membership. About 1/3 of the state’s active cachers are members of WGA.

Is it proper to post a question and then answer your own question?
