I clicked on one of those links that show up in email and look what their third suggestion is.

I do find it a bit disheartening that there needs to be a list like this to help families figure out what to do. We more or less followed the same general rule raising our kids that our parents did….”Go outside and play!” The kids figure it out if given the chance.
07/02/2011 at 2:26 pm #1949568Same thing here, Gwyn. We were told to come home for lunch when the noon whistle blew, and for supper when the 6:00 whistle blew. They never saw much of us in between. Things aren’t quite the same now, but it sure beats sitting in front of the TV and the computer. (So why am I doing just that right now???)

GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!! 😆
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
07/02/2011 at 3:00 pm #1949570I will only chime in as a Mom that can’t just say “Go outside and play.” My kids can’t play in our yard without a parent as I can’t see the yard from most spots in the house (and it’s all front – no fenced in back yard). We also live on a street on the outskirts of town where the speed limit changes and people use our driveway as a turnaround. They will drive right through our circle drive and wave at us….So going outside means we all go. can be good or bad depending on the chore list for Mom.
I remember my mom sending us outside and then locking the door so we didn’t do the in-out, in-out thing.
Not whining, just saying that’s the choice we’ve made here to ensure safety at this point.
07/02/2011 at 3:09 pm #1949571I know there are situations where you can’t just tell a kid to get outside, but that’s not the same thing as not really knowing what to do with kids outside, which certainly isn’t a problem for most here.
And to BigJim…..I was outside! Just came in to get a drink. Now I’ll be back out there. Granted, some might not think messing in the garden is play, but I do! 😀
07/02/2011 at 3:17 pm #1949572I think he meant me, Gwyn… 😳 😳 😳
07/02/2011 at 3:29 pm #1949573Just covering for you, Pat! Now I AM going back out to the dirt!
07/03/2011 at 12:34 am #1949574I don’t know how disheartening it really is. Look at the source. The list is from about.com. About.com is, in my mind, the internet’s largest stash of the obvious. If it is on about.com, most people already know it, so it follows that this list is evidence that most people already know to get outside! 🙂
