It was interesting for me to watch this segment after having sent several email invitations to Dan Small and others at Outdoor Wisconsin back in the early days of the sport (I emailed them in 2001 and 2002). Dan replied to me at that time, saying something to the effect of there are so many outdoor activities that OW can’t cover them all. I believe The Beast (Ray) also wrote to the program a couple of years later with no success. Now when they finally do a segment, they include several missteps, as pointed out above. And the urban drive-up caches they chose were no doubt convenient for the TV crew but hardly a good representation of how geocaching can help people experience nature, exercise and the outdoors.
06/01/2007 at 2:04 pm #1875101While I think there was some merit to the show highlighting geocaching, I was also very disappointed. While I consider myself still a newbie, I have never seen a clear lock’n’lock laying on the ground under a tree. As someone already pointed out; bubble gum? Not only is it against the rules, but are you seriously going to eat that? And they really didnt stress the whole signing of the log – it seems they were more worried about the trading. Nor did they complete the process of logging the find. At a minimum they could have a graphic with a web address to find out more info. 🙁

This program did present the newbie’s excitement well. It also showed, subtly, one of my favorite parts of geocaching: realizing that you don’t know a place you thought you knew (“I didn’t even know this was here!”)
The experienced GC’er was patient, and taught the newbie what he knew.
But I think we can do better.
We should be able to find a media contact that would be willing to take a little more time to prepare a thorough overview of “Geocaching as We Know It.”
(uh oh, I thinking I hear a committee forming.)06/01/2007 at 9:24 pm #1875103@2_Stand wrote:

(uh oh, I thinking I hear a committee forming.)Too late, its already formed. 😉 It’s called the Community Education Committee and we’d love to have you join us! 😀
06/04/2007 at 2:45 pm #1875104My opinion, I think it could have been done better. The fact that there was gum in the caches really “bugged” me too! Only a matter of time before some critters or insects have fun with that. 🙄 The cache under the tree, no camo on it, not covered, etc… Then they go schlepping through the cemetary 😕 and basically give the location away (wonder if the owner of the cache knows his cache will probably get muggled). Anyways, I just think it could have been presented a bit better with more emphasis on the important aspects of geocaching, not so much the trading of goodies. Such info as CITO, seeing interesting places, hiding/camoing a cache well, respectfulness in cemetaries, etc… Oh and by the way, if there is a committee, I would be interested in being on it!

I will sign you up. Anybody else?
I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but we have several items on the Community Education Committee agenda for the upcoming months. Right now we are figuring out how to organize all the requests coming for giving presentations and coming up with materials for said presentations. But there’s lots of other stuff to do too! 😀

Dan Hilbert, according to the MPTV website.
I did identify the first cache they visited. Right after they find it, they took a shot of his GPSr and the coordinates, N43 08.245 W087 55.865. That puts them at USM Summer Camp Project (GCWT06).
The last cache, in the cemetary, is most likely WSQ Hallowed Be My Name (GCPNCA).
Anyone recognize names in those logs? Ironically, Team Vaughn visited both of those caches on the same day as the Outdoor Wisconsin people.

I knew that cache looked familiar !! I even said to my wife “That looks like that one cache we did just laying there with no camo.” At least I threw some pine needles over it.
06/08/2007 at 4:25 pm #1875109Rather than just complain I emailed Dan about the show. Below is the response I got from him. If I hear from Deb or anyone else I will let you know.
Lee
Lee: Thanks for the note. I will share this with our director, Jack Abrams, and Debby Wolniak, who produced the segment for their response.
Jack/Deb: Did you go through a local group to do this segment, or was the guest just someone interested in the sport?
Dan
