No, I’m not looking for a fortune teller…
I’m soliciting advice on what type of Palm (or other device) to get (upgrade to) for paperless caching.
See the deal is, I got this Palm VIIx off eBay for like $20. Worked beautifully with Cachemate, did just what I needed and nothing more. And at the price point I never worried about losing it.
Well, you guessed it…we lost it. So back to eBay, and I made the mistake of buying a Palm VII, then trying to upgrade the firmware and OS…which it did not like. So back to eBay and buy a Palm VIIx again, but this one has a flaky on-off switch that drains the battery somehow.
So, rather than go the legacy tech route again, I thought we might upgrade to something a bit more robust. But I am too lazy to do the research, and I’m sure there are all sorts of opinions out there just waiting to be opined. So opine away…
On the Left Side of the Road...05/06/2008 at 2:17 am #1888849My Garmin Colorado is the bee’s knees. And you don’t need a PDA!!
I’m just throwin’ it out there 🙂 The more Colorado owners out there, the more of you can do my WhereIgo modules once I figure out the tutorial….

lot of people have the Palm Tungsten E2, and really like them.
I use a PocketPC HP-Rx3715 myself.
I have used the Palm Tungsten E2, and it is a great unit. You shouldn’t have a problem picking one of them up for about 100 bucks.

05/06/2008 at 3:31 am #1888851I just upgraded from my m125 to a Dell Axim X30 that I got for about 80 bucks on eBay. I definitely prefer how Cachemate looks and operates on this one.
05/06/2008 at 2:14 pm #1888852The human brain has incredible storage capacity, and comes in a nice carrying case that’s hard to lose, try using it instead of tech.
Then again, it’s operating system siezes up just about as often as Windows Vista. At least mine does. 😆
05/06/2008 at 2:43 pm #1888853I’ve been using a Palm Tungsten E-2 for a couple of years now, and it has worked great. My brother just replaced his E-2 with another Palm unit that is wi-fi equipped, but I don’t know the model number. It is very cool though.
05/06/2008 at 2:59 pm #1888854Palm Advice?? I am surprised to see that so many people do paperless caching.
I am almost embarrassed to tell which one I use…oh well, who am I trying to impress?!?
I use the good ‘ole Palm Zire…not the Zire 21, 31, 72, or whatever numbers that can come after…just the original. Black and White screen…but it works great with Cachemate, and it does what I want it to do and NOTHING more! I think they are actually giving them away on eBay… 😀
Thats my two cents…I need to save up my pennies and put them into gas money. There will be no upgrades in our near future.

Ya but my now-40-year-old brain can’t keep track of all the details on the hundreds of little waypoints on the GPSr…let alone convert ROT13 clues from memory…
On the Left Side of the Road...05/06/2008 at 3:22 pm #1888856Is there any “do it all” device that’s worth considering?
I know there are GPSrs that have a camera now…that would be handy and it’s probably time to update the Lowrance iFinder (after being recently told by another geocacher, ‘Oh, I remember using one of those!’)
Anyway, some sort of GPS/camera/organizer type device?
Come to think of it, my cell phone is pretty legacy too…hmmm.
On the Left Side of the Road...05/06/2008 at 3:37 pm #1888857well other than the camera, my Garmin Colorado is a caching dream. But if you want an organizer TOO, you might have to look into one of the GPS enabled PDA’s….not very rugged….
As far as the Lawrence models, I was looking at the 2000 I think it was, because of the touch screen and built in camera, but I have heard SO MANY stories about how awful they work and their customer service (which is in India) leaves a LOT to be desired.
05/06/2008 at 4:10 pm #1888858I like my Palm Tungsten E2 … it’s overkill for caching, but I use it for other stuff too. I had the Zire 31 prior, it worked fine too, except the screen was harder to read in the sunlight.

I currently am using a Palm 500, doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but tends to give me what I need.
It is getting harder to play High Tech games on a budget. 😕
