Really want to start paperless caching but totally lost on whats what in pdas. can anyone help?
01/08/2007 at 11:06 pm #1768095If you’d like to save money and accomplish the same thing, go on eBay and purchase and old palm for 20-30 bucks. I am using a Palm IIIe Holds all the caches that I have loaded in my GPSr. It wasn’t so expensive that I feel I have to leave it in the car.
Of course you will need a program like cachemate loaded into the palm. I know that there are others out there but it is what I have and it works well for me. I cost about 8 bucks. I keep finding new features that it does while out caching.
Of course there is GSAK but that is a whole ‘nother topic.

if all you want to use the pda for is geocaching, then the cheap route would work fine. i have a tungsten T5 and love it. i can play games, listen to music, geocache, and keep track of appointments and addresses01/09/2007 at 2:40 am #1768099Personally, I use GSAK to export my cache info to HTML, Plucker to convert the HTML to a Palm PDB file and Plucker Viewer on the Palm to browse the data.
01/09/2007 at 3:14 am #1768100I was quite happy with Plucker for quite some time (it’s free, and I just liked saying the name). But then I discovered the wonder and beauty that is Cachemate, and I quickly deleted the Plucker.
Both are similar, if you just want cache information at your fingertips, but Cachemate is really much easier to use, and has a lot more to offer!

01/09/2007 at 2:57 pm #1768101I too rather use CacheMate than Plucker … if for no other reason (but there are many), is that CacheMate has a screen that allows you to “log” the date/time of your find just by clicking a button and also punch in notes about the cache you just found. CacheMate then puts all your found caches in a “Found” group on the Palm that you later can use as your information source when typing your Found It notes on the GC website. Plucker is more read only and doesn’t “complete the loop” like CacheMate.
01/09/2007 at 3:04 pm #1768102I’m looking for a cheap PDA that will be able to be used for caching…if someone has an extra one laying around please let me know…..

I do. I actually have 2, but only one works on a regular basis.

Perhaps you could lend it to me while I find a cheap AND reliable unit? Sux being on a geocaching budget 😕
I would like to load cachemate on it and give that a try as I have been destroying a lot of trees lately in my latest quest for cache….
01/09/2007 at 9:57 pm #1768105I don’t know what your budget is, Lostby, but I got my first palm on ebay for $8 including shipping. I was already a hardcore GSAKer when I got my first Palm, but I did need to buy Cachemate, so my total startup cost was just under $16. After about 1 year of service, it gave up the ghost (still works, but won’t sync with a PC, you can have it if you want), so I broke down and bought a new one (from Palm) for under $100, including a hardshell case.
01/09/2007 at 10:16 pm #1768106I think I have a line on one…thanks everyone! It looks like the consensus is that cachemate is the way to go as well so that will be bought and loaded. I can’t believe how cheaply these can be bought second hand.
01/09/2007 at 10:46 pm #1768107For some reason I think I would still be destroying trees if I wasn’t gifted my old palm. Practically brand new too. Of course by now I would have cried and kicked my feet til I would have got one.
LB7- You should try that?
02/05/2007 at 2:30 am #1768108I started using a PDA a few months ago and love it! You don’t have to carry those obnoxious papers around anymore. I use cache mate works great and it has a lot of kewl features on it. Plus you can carry the PDA with you in case you need to look something up….. has come in handy quite a few times. I have a more expensive one but, I use it for appts, music, and everything else too!!!
