For those of you planning to geocache in Ozaukee County … the bridge over the Milwaukee River, east of Saukville (at N43 22.928 W87 56.202) is scheduled to be closed March 17th through March 21st … they are moving it sideways to make room to build a new bridge next to it … a site worth seeing, I suspect.
There are not many places to cross the Milwaukee River in this area. To the north you have to cross in Fredonia/Waubeka at N43 28.176 W87 58.428 … or to the the south in Grafton at N43 19.203 W87 56.972
I will post any change/new information if it appears.
Here’s a photo of the beast they’re moving: http://www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/history/saukbridge.htm

03/11/2005 at 3:16 am #1737824Oh man!!! I need to visit Harrington Beach State Park to check on my hiding spots on the 19th of March for our April event. Thanks for the warning. Guess I’ll have to take the long way around. Tami
03/11/2005 at 3:42 pm #1737825All … the latest news is it will be closed 6pm Fri 3/18 until 6am Mon 3/21 (per yesterday’s newspaper) … but I just can’t believe everything will be done on time.
Tami … take the northern detour, it puts you on a straight west to east path to Harrington any way … I will email you the suggested route. And, stop shamelessly plugging our event, I’m way too popular the way it is … I knew I should have went with “LadyKiller” instead of “EnergySaver”, but my wife wouldn’t let me! [UPDATE: directions sent, ironically the “detour” is 4 miles shorter than the normal route, go figure.]

03/18/2005 at 9:59 pm #1737826Update …
All still seems unschedule for “the chop, slide and drop” tonight at 6pm. I just hope they don’t drop it in the river and leave us stranded.
Was kind of creeping, I was crossing the bridge about an hour ago, as they were cutting the bolts at the pavement level that hold the bridge to the approach roadway. I guess those bolts aren’t very important, since I was still driving on it.
03/19/2005 at 3:42 am #1737827Ron, you’re such the daredevil. You should have been a stuntman! Thanks for the update on the bridge. Highway A is a nice alternative. Tami
03/20/2005 at 9:41 pm #1737828All seems to be well … went to check on this myself … the bridge IS moved, but is NOT open to the public yet, however construction crews are driving on it and letting photo-hounds like me walk on it. In theory, it would appear that it will open as schedule on Monday.
If you want to check out some photos … go to my new Travel Bug, in honor of the big doings in our little nearby village … http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=131736
