I was speaking with the Fitchburg parks director today about possibly hiding a cache in one of their fine parks. He mentioned that he thought there were already some caches in the cities’ parks. I confirmed this, and he was a bit peeved that permission had/has never been sought for these placements. Not sure where to go from here, but he said a simple email explaining the cache would be fine. His email is [email protected] Not trying to step on toes, just to keep the a good relationship with one of the local parks departments.

Are the -previously placed- cache owners being addressed in this announcement WGA members? You may also want to send the specific owners(s) an email as well?

I’m sure this happens everywhere. Especially when caches are placed in public park properties in smaller cities and towns where there are no posted policies or forms that citizens know about.

I’ve been in the same situation while trying to get permission on caches and told by a park director that they were aware of many other geocaches placed without permission. And this was in a locality that had an actual posted policy on geocaching on their parks dept website!

I wouldn’t feel like you are stepping on anyone’s toes. You are merely doing what “they” should have done. 🙂

Though I have contacted reviewers in the past, I have never contacted individual cache owners. The most recent being a cache in a Dane county park with no permit.
This situation has gotten the wheels turning a bit as of late though. I’m transported back to my early days, when from the time I found my very first cache, I knew where my first placement would be. I waited until I found what I thought to be an appropriate number of caches, then sought permission for my placement. After numerous phone calls, I was connected to a nice lady. She said no. Not two weeks later and within 200′ of my desired location, a cache pops up. I called the nice lady back up and asked her if she had changed her mind. Her answer was no. For a time, I placed caches with no attempt of gaining permission. Times have changed.
This topic also reminded me of a conversation I had with a cacher some time back. He wondered how long this sport would be around. He mentioned caches placed without permission, bomb scares, trespassing issues, damage to property, and hunting during closed times. Many aspects of this game have changed for me and I’m not sure if all for the better. Just rambling a bit now, but I’d be interested in any input anyone may have.

    HT
