Other than on one’s own property, are there any types of locations that don’t require getting permission before placing caches?

Without permission cache placers and cache seekers are trespassing. Even on public lands, you may be subject to prosecution for an unauthorized use. Placing geocaches without permission is at your own risk.

Yes, we all (or almost all) do it, but this is not condoned.

The other side of the coin: seeking permission will put you in front of some wonderful people. Many of the property managers you will meet have been approached before and welcome our visits. You will find the managers at state parks are very receptive.. [check out Harrington Beach SP or Hartman Creek SP]. See our Cache in Adell [GCGQ87] it is now archived, but we had the AFD caring for the cache. The unturned stone [GCGRWJ], also archived, was a real treat to setup. The city clerk got out a map and highlighted all the city properties and then advised us which properties would be more appropriate for our use. The worst that can happen is that some one might tell you no.

OK–now who is responsible for giving permission to hide caches at boat launches (those in places that don’t have obvious contact persons, like DNR land, parks, and municipalities do)? Some of those are just along a river or lake, some without detailed signs.

And are all those dead-end or roadside cache locations managed by townships or counties or anyone?

Your questions are opposite ends of the spectrum. For boat launches, most have signage of some kind, and are USUALLY owned by either the DNR or County Parks boards. If there is no sign, you probably will need to check a plat book/GIS site or talk to the county parks commissioner who almost certainly knows.

Guardrails/dead ends are more difficult. Some are DOT, some are county road departments, city road departments, private property, you name it. If you want to get permission for these, start with the group responsible for the road.

Boat launches can be any municipality. State, county, town, city and sometimes Feds. The best thing to do is to find a county plat book. YOur local DNR office is also a good place to ask as they have maps of all sorts.
I do not know if all county courthouse have then nut i do know Sawyer and Wasburn counties have wall size maps of the county plat books.
