Ok, It’s a newbie question I guess…..what do people do when…..well…..you gotta go? Some of these multi-cache’s get long. The question goes to both the men and women as our team consists of both. Looking for what others do. If you don’t want to post responses, please email. [email protected]

OK, I’ll go first. Since most of the caches are on public land and we all follow CITO, the answer should be obvious.
The link below is from a previous news article found on WI-Geocaching web site.

01/30/2005 at 3:35 pm #1740261i guess this was posed more to the women… i understand the respect of nature….it was more the how to…you know…women don’t have the luxury of …comfort…ease…things can get a little wet. i am not meaning to be a smarty but when there isn’t a gas station around the corner and your in the middle of nowhere….i hope you get my drift …thanks jjjtba
01/30/2005 at 4:32 pm #1740262We are nothing more than another animal on this great earth. The “leave no trace” fanatics insist we should carry it out. I don’t see it happening. Much like wilderness hiking or camping, we find a suitable place and go. Thanks to a suggestion by another of our members, I went from carrying a small roll of TP in my pack to a travel pack of baby wipes. Good stuff.
01/30/2005 at 4:45 pm #1740263Well when you got to go ” You got to go”… What are you sapose to do when you just can’t hold it any longer. We keep one of those soft baby whipes container in our backpack just for that. And they also work great for that little hand and face cleaning on the dirt trails.
“Be safe and Keep on Searchin”01/30/2005 at 5:40 pm #1740264I have a supply of “TravelJohn”s, a disposable urinal found with camping supplies. They come in packs of 6. These have been perfect for my 5 year old daughter who always has to go when we’re out in the middle of a woods. It’s a bag with a cup at one end to pee into and an absorbent gel inside to suck up the liquid. She can use it while standing up and stays clean and dry. Once used, I wrap it in another plastic bag and throw it away.
I don’t see this as a CITO issue. Like Cathunter says, we are just another animal. I see no problem with peeing in the woods. But these TravelJohns have been a godsend for my little girl who, no matter what I tried before, would always manage to get something wet. Now hygiene is no longer an issue for her. I would recommend them for anyone not comfortable with peeing in whatever environment they happen to find themselves in.
01/30/2005 at 8:56 pm #1740265I have been in this situation on a number of occasion while caching. And when you gotta go, you gotta go. There is actually small rolls of TP out there that are designed for those “on the go”. Myself, a package of kleenex works just fine. Oh, and make sure you make your potty stops on caches in the middle of nowhere — in an urban environment, this sort of behavior is frowned upon.

01/30/2005 at 9:17 pm #1740266there’s a book out that i used to have…..don’t know where it is now, but its called “how to Sh*t in the woods”. Its entertaining, AND useful lol

Now I understand that things are a LOT easier for men. We would take a roll of TP inside a plastic bag. Now we also hunted on private land so we were able to leave it behind and the TP would quickly go back to the earth. I mean I hunted it the same spot for years. If on public land I think that we should clean up our TP but for the other job men can be the dogs we are. I have no idea for how women manage in the woods so I can’t help there.
01/30/2005 at 10:04 pm #1740268Well if you are looking for a comment from the beast… I have nothing to add to this thread
01/30/2005 at 11:27 pm #1740269Come on beast! Does a bear really crap in the woods???
01/31/2005 at 1:51 am #1740270Okay, so I have to put my two-cents in since there haven’t been many women adding theirs. I bring along some kleenex and a ziploc so I can carry out the kleenex. The human waste stuff is good fertilizer, and should be buried a bit, but I wouldn’t want to leave the paper part out there, and stay away from rivers/lakes. The whole process doesn’t look as inconspicuous as men, and it’s a little more awkward, but you make it work. Don’t ask me about winter, because I really try to avoid that problem. Good luck! 😛
01/31/2005 at 4:15 am #1740271I am the very proud father of three daughters (10,7,4) who are all able to sucessfully pee in the woods without wetting themselves! (The youngest, almost 2, is still learning how to use the toilet so I’ll give her a bit of time, yet) And yes, a roll of TP helps, but occasionally they get stuck drip drying.

If you read the Leave No Trace article, you’ll see that’s not what the LNT people say at all.
01/31/2005 at 11:54 am #1740273I figured Cathunter’s comment might create comment. But I would like to thank everyone who has, more or less, offered advice. So far, we are going to attempt the mini-potty idea. Thanks again for the great discussion, but we also are still open to other ideas. Thanks again!
