that is funny…
10/25/2008 at 12:38 am #1897163maybe they are duplicates….
i’d call it a “feature”

If you’re paperless with Cachemate, you can sort your list of caches either by cache name or waypoint number, depending on how they show up in your GPS.
If you’re using paper, well, you have the paper that tells you all about the cache in your grubby little hands and have any number of ways to match what you’re looking for to where you are.
What am I missing here?
Oh, boy … could I say a lot here. But it would be a lot of duplication from a private e-mail conversation that neither side will ever win.
10/25/2008 at 12:50 am #1897165Hey, we changed all the WSQs for ya, so kwitcherbellyachin. Lander and Lancelot threatening us with a medieval pox had nothing to do with it.
But that’s where I draw the line dagnabbit!
Hmmmmm…on second thought, what if I just change the name on ALL of our caches to simply: Cache 😈

Does anyone know how to fix this? a solution that doesn’t cost money?
Only way to solve this I can think of …………….buy a Garmin
Just kidding, no one else said it yet

Only problem with your answer Barry is that this happens with the Yellow Etrexs. They only accept a 6 digit GC number, now that many GC numbers are 7 digits it drops the last number. Real problem when you are doing a series and they have successive numbers.
Best solution I have found GSAK, because it gives the cache an unique 6 letter name. Of course I could upgrade my unit but $30 for GSAK compared to $300 or more for a upgraded unit, GSAK fit the budget better

I don’t know if I ever noticed this problem on the 210, are you loading using the Magellan geocache manager software or GSAK?
I use the Megellan software. But I could use GSAK. I use GSAK with my Palm so I can do paperless.
I have never heard of unique cache names? How is that done?
10/25/2008 at 3:35 pm #1897169GSAK Doesnt use the GC number when you download. So you end up with the following :
GC11METR 21-Trunk Salute
GC10K05 American Freedom
GCZB8G A Number of Movies – Magnificent Seven
GC13XF3 Aqua Spot
GCVWDA A Scout is .. Brave
GCVK8K Beach Tree
Become
21TRNK
AMERCN
NUMBRF
AQUSPY
SCOTSB
BECHTRAs you see caches that start words like A are treated a little differently (I see it with The and I also), but I always do a GSAK printout also. It is the only paper I take as everything else is paperless.
Only other thing that maybe worth mention is you use a Magellon (sic) I strictly use Garmin so I dont know if that may cause a difference, but I suspect not and certainly would be worth a trial download

Go into GSAK. Click on Tools, Options. Smart name fields in lower right. Change to 6 characters.
Then Click Display. Find smart Names field, and put a check mark in it. Then Click OK.
Smart Name will show on the display screen, along with cache names, etc. You can move the field to any spot in the line up by click and dragging.
Come to my Paperless class to find out more!
10/25/2008 at 5:42 pm #1897171😯 What??? Geocaches have names? Will they come if you call them? Names, We don’t need no stinkin names. 😆

By default, GSAK uses the “smartnames” that you describe above. You can make it use the GC numbers instead by changing the configuration.

Thanks marc for the walkthrough. I “think” I know most stuff about going paperless. But I will definitely keep my eyes open for one of your classes.

Hey, whataya know….that works neat. Excellent! Thanks Marc, I learned something (once again) about GSAK. It works like the Swiss!!
10/29/2008 at 12:57 am #1897175We hand enter stuff on our etrex H, so when we were caching in Wisconsin Rapids today, we looked for a cache that we had labeled “WR” a few months ago. Had no trouble finding the cache, but since the container and log book had no identification on them, we had to figure out which cache it was when we got back home. At least it wasn’t in Appleton!
Guess we’re just as good or as inept as all the new-fangled gizmos!
