#1. i was just looking at some caches in arizona for our upcoming vacation. i believe that photos cannot be mandatory to log ec’s, but while checking out virtuals in ariz i see that a lot have no requirements except for the mandatory photo. did photo req’s get grandfathered in or are they legally still being used as the only requirement in vc’s?
#2. when are vc’s coming back? the last i saw, the date was postponed.

I follow the EarthCache forums on gc.com and this issue has been discussed in much length on there. Basically, new caches that are published can not have any photo requirements on the cache page. Old ones don’t need to be changed but the CO can’t delete logs on the basis of no photo. For example, my Hall of Mosses EC was created before the change in rules and one of my requirements is to have a photo. I can leave the cache page as is but if people choose not to upload an image but still meet the other requirements then that is sufficient for a smiley. My Erosion In The Dells EarthCache was created after the rule change so I was not allowed to have a photo requirement at all.

OK, now for own opinion. Many people still upload photos. It’s fun! Plus, the cache owner went to the trouble of creating these pages and monitoring the logs (EC’s and V’s can be a little more work in this way) and I like to meet their requirements. I figure it’s the least I can do. Plus, I don’t have a problem with posting pictures on the net. But then again, there are plenty of people that do and are afraid of an invasion of privacy and I understand the need to accept that.

I have heard it was delayed again but I can’t remember the exact date. Wasn’t it mid summer?

Oh, I may as well add that I put the following on a couple of my EC’s. Hopefully it won’t get me into any trouble with groundspeak. No one has complained yet:

“BONUS: We are no longer allowed to require a photo for submission requirements but you would make this CO very happy if you would take a picture of your caching team in the area or in the cave and choose to upload it. Again, not a requirement, it just would be nice. :-)”

Looks like the Virtuals will be back by August, at the latest.

Here’s the latest official word, and the link to the gc “Customer Feedback” forum topic:

      Status: started

We continue to work on the project, but unfortunately will be unable to launch something until late June or early July. I’ll update this if anything changes. We’ll be incorporating the concept into our August 20 Block Party in Seattle, so early August is the absolute latest that we’ll have something live. (13675)

I was going to say something about puzzle caches being similar, but I don’t want to steal the thread. 😉
