Starting this thread to get an idea of how you all thought the picnic went.
    Changes/improvements/comments/stories?

these will be discussed by the WGA Board of Directors at a future meeting.

    thank you.

Everything was great EXCEPT what happened to grills ready round #2?The fire was almost out, no more charcoal and we were the only ones eating in the pavilion after the raffle. I’m guessing it was a cut and paste typo error that didn’t get edited out?

    The good:
    1) Location was good considering the caching related opportunities in the general area (both inside the park and within a few miles of the park).
    2) Sign in seemed to be well organized.
    3) Communications before about road construction, timings, etc. was well done.

    The not-so good:
    1) Parking availibility
    2) Noon may have been more appropriate to accomodate the early morning arrivals that stayed for a few hours then headed out as well as the afternoon crowd for pictures, raffles, geogolf submissions, etc.

I’m not sure I have any changes to suggest, I do want to make sure the board knows: THANKS for the great time and for the great prizes! I was surprised when you said there were 67 prizes. That’s a fantastic prize list (and we appreciated winning).

Because we were camping and Mrs. S had told us about the logistics of the park, we knew about the parking issues etc. For us, we chose to go back to our site and grill and squeeze some caching in and then returned for the pic and the raffle. (To be honest, with kids along, I appreciated that flexibility)

I’d be happy to throw my name in to be a helper with things in the future also.

Zuma had the grill ready around 5 when the raffle was going. I grilled my brats at that time. I think the snafu may have been that the prize portion took so long and was at the same time?

A miscommunication regarding when to begin firing up the grill for round 2. Announcement went out for turning in the geogolf and bingo sheets at 4pm so prizes could be arranged and -cheeto- could have time to figure the golf winners. The match was struck to the coals at 4 pm also but should have been fired up at least following the picture at 4:30.

so many prizes, I guess that did take a long time to annouce all those winners. It was a long day and having a round two for the grills was kind of a courtesy for those who wished to grill out again or missed the lunch time grilling.

So I’ll blame it all on Ralph. He has to satisfy the firebug in him. We invited him to visit our campsite and he showed up Friday before we even had a campfire going. I think he was just looking for dinner which we did graciously supply and enjoyed his and Laurens company. I think the other problem late on Saturday afternoon was that the temperature was starting to drop and I know some who planned on grilling changed their minds. We were living outdoors all weekend and took it in stride.

I’m really not complaining. I just wanted to post under this topic and see if I’m still getting those double and triple posts.

well as one of the crazy cachers that walked from the campground to the Night Cache in the pitch black of night (ie 10pm)… I’m pretty glad that we saw “no live bears in the wild.” You have NO idea how dark it is until you trek that stretch of the park in the dark….

I would agree with all of this, although I did manage to nab an actual parking spot right across from the pavilion. Bonus since I thought I’d be hiking it from winter parking with babies, food & pack. 😆

Having the contests finish around lunch would be nice since almost everyone showed up to eat anyways and then we could all go back out caching. As it was, I was lucky my boys cooperated all day, then when we left near the end of the raffle they both lost it and subsequently passed out for the car ride home! BONUS! 😉

Everything was great! The grills not only provided heat for lunch but a few of my girls used it to keep warm during the later portion of the event. I usually not a fan of big crowds, but everything was spaced out so well. Got to meet some nice folks. Wish we could have set up a campfire gathering for those who did camp in the park. Of course I am sure we could have found someone to join if we would have asked. There’s always next year.

We were lucky and won some prizes which were greatly appreciated. We usually don’t win anything. For us, geocaching is well deserved family time together and prizes where just a bonus to the day.

We are looking forward to see you all at the next event and out on the trails!

Yep, and thanks for sharing the campfire and the chili. Zumette and Robin and I were hoping to make a return trip Saturday night, but little Zumette had enough fun for one day.

    thanks a bunch.

My caching buddy (salyforth) and I had a really great time. Enjoyed hiking the trails (salyforth says we walked more than 12,800 steps!) and chance to discover the beauty of Roche-A-Cri.

My first picnic… looking forward to 2011 camp-out event since I missed this year’s at Bong and remembered the fun of High Cliff (despite frigid temps!)

Thanks to the WGA board for planning and staging the event… and big thanks to the many volunteers who helped with registration and sales.
