With all the caches that were available at the picnic, I sort of assumed that nobody would find all 44. The caches that Kirsten and I hunted seemed to be pretty popular, but with the wide spread of caches and the number of people that showed up, I wondered if people tended to hit the same caches or did they spread out fairly evenly?
I started copying down some numbers, punched them into a database, then one thing led to another and I came up with a big geeky stats page.
Not everyone has logged their picnic finds yet, so the page is incomplete.
Whether you can actually divulge any useful information out of it is still up in the air, but it was fun to make nevertheless.
Looks like TATB aren’t the only ones who like keeping geo-stats…

08/27/2003 at 3:07 am #1741938Holy cow. This is incredible, Dave. I should say, it’s very credible. Amazing work!
I’m surprised that only 9 teams found the mother cache. The cache was crawling with people whenever we were there.
And the answer to your question is: very big.

tb08/27/2003 at 3:51 am #1741940Although we weren’t able to make it to the picnic, this information was pretty neat to look at. Seeing as how you probably didn’t get home til very late on Sunday, did putting this information together cut into any work time? Another sign of an addiction! Thanks for going through all the work to put this in simple form.
08/27/2003 at 4:42 am #1741941Wow, way too cool!!!
08/27/2003 at 12:44 pm #1741942I’m guessing either a lot of people haven’t gotten around to logging their finds yet, or perhaps some of our newer members aren’t aware that they are allowed to log in each of their finds. There were several people that we walked around with, but haven’t put in a log yet. (Caching Out?)
Maybe a general email as a reminder?
And NO, NO, NO! I would NEVER EVER do ANYTHING like this when I should be doing important things like WORKING! Um, yeah…
08/27/2003 at 2:59 pm #1741943Dave-
Maybe a quick email to your employer will fix this problem….wait I’m typing this post at work…errr aaaaa nevermind.Nice job on the stats!! What are you using to generate the reports automatically? Perl or Tcl? Or did you just do this by hand?
Very cool! (Is there a way to see a team ranking? I know, I know, it’s not a competition…but I’d like to see how far behind Lil’Otter we were.)

PHP and mySQL. Graphs done with PHP GD library extensions.

Actually, in the spirit of the whole “it’s not about the numbers” thing, I deliberately left off team comparisons. If you really want to know, you can click through the list of team names for the ones you are interested in.
I’d like to do something similar to this for some of the local caches. To do this though, I’ll have to figure out how to parse web pages to get at some of this automagically. Anyone have any tips?

Probably once a day or so if I notice new logs. I just updated it again around 8:00 this evening.

09/22/2003 at 11:22 pm #1741947Any updates coming soon? I noticed we still don’t have any finds after a few weeks.

Got me how I missed you. I’ve got this on my watch list, so I should have seen when you made your logs. Hmm.
You’re on there now…
