Interested to find out what other caches think about replacing a cache container and then counting it as a find.

The Lonely Cache Game seems to be encouraging this practice, which for that game I think it’s great maintenance on these are being done and points should be awarded. However, is encouraging replacing a cache container and counting the find a positive thing?

Isn’t placing the container yourself a lot like being the cache owner?

Just my thoughts… let the fun begin 😀

That what I was wondering yesterday. How can you possibly find a cache when you have the container in your hands to replace it. For lonely cache game sake it should either be a find with no maintenance or just maintenance. Not both.

What’s the difference between that and logging your own caches as a find? Which I do not to just for clarification but some do.

We saw this when we were new to the game and it made me cringe then. I guess, if you can live with it then it’s fine. But, I would have to have a go ahead from the cache owner before I would do it, and I would need some measure of certainty that the original cache was indeed gone. We have seen caches logged DNF 2 and 4 x, then replaced only to have someone come up with the original.

I’ve asked the same question myself, and at first only reported these as DNFs, though all I really wanted was to log the find in the first place. When I saw others claim these as a find and report them in the game as such, including one of the responders above, I decided that was the way to go with the find and the game.

I can live with doing it either way, though I would like to go back someday and find those missing caches, whoever replaces it, the owner or someone else. If some consensus is arrived at that specifies one was or the other, I can live with that, retroactive in the game or from when decided forward.

Please know that I was not picking you out specifically Dave. I was just curious what others felt about logging replacements as a find in relation to the lonely game.

I discsussed this with another area cacher and he said that the initial rules were not clear either way so it seems to go either way.

I would probably log it as a dnf but that’s just me.

Not really a Lonely Cache, but I’ll go back 6 months later and find a hide that I helped OPPS5 make. They are our daughter’s family and three grandchildren. I’ve actually had trouble with a few of them, so I don’t feel guilty for logging them. As for logging replacements in the game I think it’s ok. I’m playing strictly with the intent to improve caches, but if you get another find those playing know you’ve earned it. I fell out of a tree today looking for a Sagasu replacement from Friday. I still believe geocaching is an individual sport and the “numbers thing” is your own personal thing. Tami and Wade are two of our best geocaching friends and it probably won’t bother me until they hit 25.000. Dave can win all twelve months if he wants and it won’t bother me. I even gave him a tip on one he hasn’t found yet. I guess it’s either about the numbers or not.

Acknowledging that the initial question was a legitimate one, I do feel that so much debate over “the rules” is, well, to put it mildly, interesting. This is a game, one intended to help improve the quality of caches in our state. Team Deejay has done an incredible amount of work putting this together, with the idea of taking care of those caches that might have gone missing or fallen apart. Look at that interactive map, I can’t even comprehend how he pulled that together for our use! 😯

In the interest of full disclosure…in playing this game, I’ve replaced three containers. Two were cache revisits, so I knew where and what should be there. Still looked a long time. Contacted cache owners offering to place a new one for them. Around here, after the August rains on our hillsides, many smaller caches simply washed away, and in the case of both cache placers, they do not live in the area. In the case of the third one, many previous finders had commented that the container needed replacing. Knowing I’d be up that way, I contacted the owner, checking to see what kind of replacement would be reasonable. After a tough search, I did locate the original and placed the new one. When the owner and I can connect, he’ll get the original back. In all three cases, I guess I didn’t log a find without having actually found the original in the first place, so it’s a little different than perhaps whatever brought up the question.

Whether I get points for these gestures or not is really irrelevant. I’m happy to be seeking these out, because they’ve been in really cool spots, and if they’re missing, helping the cache owners will ensure others can appreciate the cool spots. I know from others’ experiences, some states are not very vigilant about cache archiving/disabling, and it’s very frustrating to travel and hope to find one, only to see that it’s long gone. This game’s ultimate purpose is to avoid that situation in the Badger State, and I applaud the efforts of all who have taken any small part in helping this effort. Yes, there are prizes to be won, but isn’t the real prize is knowing that all this effort will help ensure that the only reason I DNF is my own caching failure, not the result of one gone missing and unreported?

        Remember, it’s just…a…game. 😉

Sagasu (Dave) and I have been e-mailing back and forth for weeks, on some of our tougher finds and ones that have not been found ifor awhile.
I give him AND (anyone else permission) to replant caches that have gone MIA. I believe this keeps the “geocaching game” going.

When I (not speaking for Professor here), get a handful of no finds in a row, I check on my caches. For one of my King Boreas caches, I had a handful of no finds, I brought out a replacement cache with me so as to not waste a trip. I couldn’t find the cache, so I replaced it. A newbie comes along and finds BOTH of them. Go figure! But hey, now I have two caches out there! Works for me! It’s funny how caches migrate.

When AuntieNae and I went to the FLASH Mob event in Chicago two weekends ago I e-mailed some cache owners about their disabled caches and encouraged them to get them up and running before the weekend. Only one out of 6 replaced their cache and enabled it. Two of the disabled owners e-mailed me back stating that they couldn’t get to do cache maintainence before the weekend. So, I responded saying I could replace the log for one, and replace the entire cache/log for the other. They were both grateful! You bet that I claimed each one as a find.

        Keeps the (geocaching) game going…..Tami
