Could you please direct those of us new to WGA to a place that explains what goes on at the WGA camp-out and the WGA picnic? Or relate here what goes on at these events?
We have seen posts here and in cache logs, and everyone seems to enjoy going, but we don’t know what the various types of activities are and how the caches are placed, looked for, permanent/temporary, and are there educational and service activities, etc.
Don’t get too detailed on a specific event, because we’re sure that comes out when the event gets closer, but we new people need to be enlightened and have the wisdom of the senior cachers shared with us. (BTW, we have another commitment for this year’s camp-out date, but we still seek the knowledge.)
03/08/2008 at 4:15 pm #1885835yes please… as I consider going to the campout and have never been to a WGA event thus far I need to consider what might happen at a campout event. will the whole family have things to do all weekend? any non-caching activities taking place?? we figure in may it’s not warm enough to swim so that pretty much leaves hiking on trails and activities related to the event. What typically are those activities? Thanks to anyone with responses!

03/09/2008 at 3:58 am #1885838after reading the minutes of the WGA meeting, we hope that the Temporary Cache at WGA events is brought up before May, everyone here knows our feelings on temporary caches and just can’t bring my self to be part of that game, just not the way we play, hope it gets brought up soon

At our last board meeting we did commit to making a decision prior to the event. What that decision will be, is yet to be seen. Look for a referendum on the subject soon, and we can all express our viewpoint at that point in time.

03/09/2008 at 1:39 pm #1885841Why not list all those temporary caches on a website that allows temporary caches? Then all the logging of temps is above board and “legal”.

Awesome Idea rogheff, everyone gets the one “legal” GC.com smiley, and those who feel the need for logging temps, can still do so, also “legally” on one of those other sites
Finally someone came up with a fix to the problem

03/10/2008 at 3:24 am #1885843Here we go again…..that poor horse is going to get another whipping! ๐ It seems certain people want everyone to geocache as they see fit, based on their beliefs and opinions, forgetting that this sport is more than big enough for all. Why do people continually want to impose their interpretation of geocaching, which inevitably leads to ideas of eliminating things or imposing barriers or restrictions?
Hey, if Jeremy Irish isn’t losing any sleep over Wisconsinites logging temp caches, why are some of you losing sleep over it? No one says you have to hunt temp caches and/or log them. If you don’t like them then fine, but don’t tell me and others how to play this game. Hey, I’m all for positive discussion of Wisconsin Geocaching, and everyone should have a voice, but how about discussion that expands our sport and doesn’t seek to limit it based on who talks the loudest or is the most persuasive?
People play the game differently. You play it how you like it and I’ll play it how I like to. That’s the beauty–it’s big enough for all! ๐ Wade & Tami
03/10/2008 at 3:53 am #1885844Possibly then the WGA Board can play it the way they decide to play it also.

2006 was our first full year of geocaching and one of the most enjoyable parts of it was attending events (we did seven). This year we plan on even more. Some of the other cachers that we now call our friends hunt and log the temps, but we know several who show up, socialize, log one “attended” find only and we all still have a great time together. Geocaching isn’t a competition. If you don’t like other peoples numbers stop looking at their logs and profile. Let’s all spend more time on things constructive and help maintain and improve the sport. Take a look at the “general” forum and see what Team Hemisphere Dancer is doing. That is what geocaching should be about. I would like to wake up tomorrow and see all of this temporary log controversy gone.

HUH??? It’s not??? Why do people fall over each other for an FTF or leave the house at 4:30 am for a FTF????
Again. IT”S JUST a SILLY GAME in all reality. You play it the the way you want and I’ll play it the way I want. If you do not like the way I chose to play so be it.
03/10/2008 at 11:03 am #1885847Another solution is hold an event “UP North” where there is lots of room for new permanent caches! 8)

The Campout has also proven to introduce many newbies to camping. I’m amazed at how many people take up camping for the first time in order to attend. Camping is a great family activity, and a group setting is a great way to get help and advice when learning the ropes.
The evening bon-fires are a fun time to socialize. You are sure to find some roasting hotdogs, and smores. Many people also take the opportunity to share some unique beers, however, this isn’t a drunk fest.
The kids seem to bond well, and will be running around having fun, and making up games. Plenty of trees to climb and places to hide and seek as well.
