To whom it may concern:
I put a lot of time, effort and money into my caches. If you don’t like them for whatever reason, please just don’t hunt them. If you’re taking the time to hunt them, just so you can steal them for your collection, then what’s the point? So I implore you, please leave them be. If you have a personal problem with me, then take it up with me. These caches belong not only to me and my family, but to the entire geocaching community.
Sincerely,
Jay11/24/2009 at 1:30 am #1917189Don’t tell me that another one of yours got ripped off. That bites.
11/24/2009 at 2:10 am #1917190I take it you are pretty confident someone is taking them with the purpose of revenge. Have any idea’s whom it might be?
11/24/2009 at 5:47 am #1917191Sorry to hear about the trouble, and I realize that you’re probably just venting, but I think it’s unlikely that the culprit reads these forums. I could be wrong…
11/24/2009 at 2:45 pm #1917192Jeff, I lost NEMESIS 15 & 19 in one weekend after making a post here that I was thinking of planting another NEMESIS.
Since posting this thread I’ve been contacted by several other SE Wisconsin cachers who are having the same problems. They’re creative and/or difficult to find caches are disappearing, but ammo boxes, match stick containers and caches in the open are staying put.
Odd how our most difficult to find caches keep disappearing, but the ones that stand out even to non-geocachers stay put for years.
And no, I have no idea who is doing this, but honestly if I did, I wouldn’t say at this point. If and when I can confirm absolutely who it is, I will post the team name here.
11/24/2009 at 5:14 pm #1917193Add .. rocks with holes in them .. tell me muggles are taking those?
11/24/2009 at 6:29 pm #1917194I doubt that it WAS muggles, just as I doubt that it was a muggle that took one of my ammo cans and replaced it with a plastic trash bag (swag and log intact). I was only saying that someone of that low calibur would probably not find any interest in these forums.
11/24/2009 at 9:56 pm #1917195Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if a muggle took an ammo box and left everything else. This sounds like something a hunter would do. The difference is that Jay’s containers are all effectively micros, and not of use to anyone for much of anything.
I also wouldn’t be surprised at some of these containers getting removed as trash. Someone cleaning up the area is not going to understand that a light bulb lying among other trash is something special. Now, if they left the trash and took the light bulb…
I think everyone who has placed a cache has had them disappear now and then. It is the nature of the activity when we hide things in areas with public access that, sometimes, the public accesses (and takes) the things. Additionally, we all are aware of “geocachers” who steal coins, remove all the swag from a cache, or do other antisocial things. This is unfortunate, but our choices are to give up and let the thugs win, or keep doing the things we enjoy.
11/24/2009 at 10:39 pm #1917196Hmm…too bad they did log it, “TCLN (took cache left nothing) thanks for the hide.” Seriously though, I don’t understand why anybody would do that sort of thing. It seems like a lot of work for something that effects (relatively) few people.
11/24/2009 at 10:49 pm #1917197Place another one, but this time hide “Trail Cam” in the vacinity to catch the thief. Day or night the trail cam will catch the person.
11/24/2009 at 11:41 pm #1917198Trail Cams are highly effective .. even if they are not really recording ..
lets just say Parks & Rec has used one in a location for several months .. and well, no one replaced the batteries after the first week .. we went from constant vandalism to none for now11/24/2009 at 11:48 pm #1917199I have a cache that’s an ammo box hidden under a large fake rock. It’s been hit three times now. The first time, I had really nice swag, but it was emptied out, including the log book. The second time, I replaced it with dollar store stuff, and that all got stolen. Both times they left the ammo box and the rock. Last summer the rock was heisted. I replaced it with a medium-sized fake rock. If that goes..the cache is done.
11/25/2009 at 12:40 am #1917200This discussion leads me to the following observation:
Why are cachers placing mircos?
Certainly not a hassle when they disappear, even if a matchstick holder (most expensive one I can think of).
(This does not excuse the behavior of the pirates).

11/25/2009 at 4:15 am #1917202this topic inspired me today… ace hardware 3/16 steel cable around a tree and my ammo boxes in higher traffic parks are now secure.
