Woo Hoo!
Groundspeak will be change the number of caches in a single pocket query from 500 to 1000. The head frog even promised that this will be in place by May 2nd this year.03/08/2010 at 11:09 pm #1924548Guess when you finally have over a million active caches, something’s gotta be done!

(This of course assumes they used good programming practices like defining a global variable – i.e. one change only)03/09/2010 at 12:28 am #1924550@Team Black-Cat wrote:

03/09/2010 at 4:10 pm #1924551Are they able to download attributes to PQ’s now without scrambling up the works? I know that had been an issue for quite a while. I’d prefer them improving that to adding more caches 😀
Oconto...the birthplace of western civilization:)
03/09/2010 at 4:56 pm #1924552AFAIK the attributes issue has been fixed for a while.
CJ, the issue with changing to 500 wasn’t a programming issue as much as a performance issue.
cheezehead, I have no desire to EVER find 500 caches in a day. If I cache with someone else, I probably won’t know their exact route ahead of time, but just a general area. I have mis-guessed a few times and not had the right area (or not a big enough area) loaded. Creating a “caches along a route” PQ with a 1 mile width hardly gets me out of the state before I get 500 caches.
Regarding 500 caches in a day, it can probably be done here.
03/09/2010 at 5:20 pm #1924553You know, it might turn into a performance gain. Instead of running 3 querys to cover the area I want, I can cut that down to 2 querys and get more caches.
03/09/2010 at 5:21 pm #1924554MmMmMmMmmm…500 in day…

Oh, I know it’s been done. But heck, I’m haapy if I get only 1 a day.
03/09/2010 at 5:30 pm #1924556I look forward to the change.
I have one PQ for puzzles, one for multis, etc, for the state. But these caches (ones I have not found yet) keep creeping over 500, so I miss some.
Also, just a PQ on traditionals, covering a wider area will be nice. I plot them out on a mapping program, and then eye ball where I want to run a Tour.
Next …. will bookmarks also go up to 1000. I was surprised to see Markwell on the GC forums wonder who ever needed that many.

This is the kind of stuff that will be the slow death of this game, IMHO.

Why would anyone want to do it differently?” mentality of the Groundspeak forums. He certainly knows how to use the search feature of that website, though. 🙂
I can’t see any reason for them not to change bookmark limits to match PQs. How big is your WSQ bookmark now?

Oh come on! What could be more fun than visiting hundreds of electrical towers in the Nevada desert?
I can’t wait to start reading some of the exciting logs from all of those caches. 🙂03/09/2010 at 8:02 pm #1924560@gotta run wrote:

This is actually interesting, IMHO. I’ve been in this area and I think the terrain ratings are different out here than in WI. This is out in the Mojave desert and looking at some quick topo maps the terrain is pretty rugged. Maybe a good entrepreneurial venture (i.e. renting atv’s, dune buggies, etc. to cachers or maybe providing the driving services).
But – Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
03/09/2010 at 8:18 pm #1924561Well, this is getting OT but TBC brought it up and started the thread so I’m blaming him…
On one hand, I can see the appeal of these trails to go out and do a “let’s do a big numbers day.” And in this particular area the terrain might be interesting, particularly if you go by ATV, etc.
But I’m just not sure that what gets people interested in geocaching is the allure of finding hundreds of filmstrip cans spaced .1 mile apart.
Yes, I know the game has lots of different things for different players and literally a million different caches, but the preponderance of placements lately seem to be roadside hides. I don’t think that fosters the stated goal of geocaching as a “high tech treasure hunt.”
I could be wrong, and if I am I’m sure I’ll hear about it. 🙄
