As a followup on our discussions of the need perceived by many that the DNRs prohibition of geocaches in SNAs needs review, I am adding a poll on the subject.

I voted yes, but want a little ammendment to it, I would be glad to not have caches in areas that should be actively protected, but I think those areas should also then be off-limits to all the other activities. It doesn’t make sense to allow hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, etc through the very same area we would want to place a cache. If there isn’t any problem with people hiking through an area, there shouldn’t be a problem with caches there. [provided all the other rules for the area are followed]

re: NSLP’s comment, I think we can all agree that there are certain areas where there is an expressed desire to keep visits to a minimum, and in those areas, geocaching is not appropriate. I would even go farther and state that allowing hiking or canoeing is not enough to suggest geocaching is acceptable by default. I think it is reasonable to assume that, if you are only allowed to hike or paddle in, the number of visits will be minimal. On the other hand, SNAs where snowmobiling, biking, climbing, skiing, motorized boating, hunting, fishing, or trapping are allowed should be open to geocaching, as well as those that actually have roads running through them. These other activities are more attractive to the general population and are allowed with the purpose of drawing visitors to the SNAs. And its pretty hard to argue that geocaching is more disruptive than driving an automobile through the area.

I would even be happy with allowing only virtuals and earthcaches in SNAs – like the National Parks. It seems like a good compromise.

And we should definitely push the “CIIO” event idea (Cache In / Invasives Out). It’s kinda fun pulling garlic mustard!

I agree, and the cache pages could include info about invasive plants. that way anyone who would be visiting the area because of geocaching could be educated about what these plants look like and what can be done to stop them.

I agree whole heartedly on both issues!

    I voted “no”.

I do think, however, that existing earthcaches and virtuals should have been allowed to stay active.

We don’t need to place regular geocaches in SNA’s. That’s what park-n-rides are for. 🙂
