Poll: Silver geocoins

Mathman yesterday showed me his sterling silver geocoin that the Alaska geocaching association produces. What a cool coin!! I will have to look into it a bit more, but apparently they mint a very limited number of the state geocoins in sterling silver. They sell for about 50 bucks.

The coin is beautiful. Obviously, it is meant for collectors, not to travel.

Price would probably fluctuate quite a bit with the price of silver.

I am just curious if there is interest within the membership of purchasing sterling silver copies of our next geocoin, if that were to be made available, and assuming our next design is great, which I am sure it will be?

I had to put a maybe, I struggled justifying 10-15$ for the few coins I just bought, I want one but for 50+ I’d have to think really hard.

I have found silver coins twice in my travels. One was a coin which was a full ounce of .999% silver. I had to make a second trip to the cache in order to trade even for it. I did vote no though….as it is all of the coins I have out are missing…not that I’d let a coin like that travel.

To me it would depend on the design of the coin. If it looked at all like the 2007 coin I would buy at least one.

Interesting idea. I’ve seen people take great pride in owning more expensive or limited geocoins. They certainly would never think of letting them out of their possession. This would most likely be the case on a coin like this if purchased. (at least for me!)

I’d buy one, and I stopped buying geocoins almost 2 years ago. The design would have to be great tho. Even a silver coin isn’t worth $50 if the design is bad.

Usually the silver or Gold coins, have no color and are just 3D Looking, Would take a really good design to pull off a coin with no colors. Dont know if I would buy one,

Note: The Alaska Mint in Anchorage does this for the Geocaching group and they make a profit off of the coins. What the true cost is would have to be looked at by contacting mint or another manufacturer. These coins are also PROOF quality. That gives them the frosty appearance.
