I am looking into going paperless. Now I would like to know what are the popular paperless choices out there. Remember your help could change my life.
02/08/2006 at 4:50 pm #1741185I use the GSAK program on the computer for the gpx files. then in 1 button click I can send it right to my PDA that used the program called Cachemate. I really like the programs well.

Clyde and GSAK are in a class all of it’s own! Nobody will argue about being the software of choice.
02/08/2006 at 5:16 pm #1741187What kind of PDA do you use?
02/08/2006 at 6:27 pm #1741188I went paperless a few months back and still can’t believe I waited so long to do so. At 1st it was a lot to set up but once you got your steps down it is actually very easy.
I used GSAK awhile back in Dec to plan a cache route for my trip to Florida and back. Using the Arc feature I was able to identify all caches along my drive that were within 5 miles of the freeway. This combined with the PDA made caching on a long trip very rewarding for when it came time to make a stop we could find which exit had caches.
I use:
GSAK for management and GPSr waypoint uploads, and cachemate prep

Not picking on you … but it’s amazing how many times this question has been asked on the message board … someone should write a monthly article, so we can just reference that.
Anyway … in my personal experience … I’ve only used Palm Pilots and have been happy with them. For geoaching purposes, I think you need to stick with one extreme or another: either get a cheap black/white screen unit, or get a BETTER color unit. The reason being that mid/low price color units tend to be hard to see in the sun. For color units I recommend anything with a screen that uses “transreflective” technology, the cheaper color units don’t and you’ll be sorry. Examples (my experience on color): do NOT get a Palm Zire or Z22 units ($99), they’re nice for everyday use but the cheap color screens disappear in the sun … so I upgraded to the Palm Tungsten E2 unit ($199), which works much better. To go with a black/white unit, check out e-bay … you can get a cheap black/white that works well for geocaching, but might not have much memory for other purposes.

02/09/2006 at 12:27 am #1741190I’m guilty of asking this question a few months back.
I am now using GSAK and Cachemate with a Tungsten E2. Very nice. I like it!
02/09/2006 at 5:03 am #1741191I am currently using a Palm V for the most part and a Sony CLIE, and have used a Handspring Visor.
Both of my current PDA’s set me back $25. I wouldn’t spend good money until you know what you really want.

02/09/2006 at 5:58 pm #1741192I am going to be hosting a paperless caching training event on March 4th in Prairie Du Sac, time to be determined yet. if you are further interested in learning about it. It is currently only listed in the Announcements forums.
I will be focusing on GSAK, Cachemate and Palm PDAs.
02/09/2006 at 10:57 pm #1741193Looking at Paperless class March 11th, in Two Rivers Gypsy Rose. Not too far for you. It’s great to see classes all over the state.
Thanks to all of you who put these on.
02/10/2006 at 12:26 am #1741194I love tech toys. I got a palm tungsten T5. I can put all my geocaching on it. i can play games on it. i can listen to music or books on it. i could connect to the internet if i wanted to and could find a blue tooth access point. but if i were looking for one now, i would get one that has wi-fi capability. that blue tooth just doesn’t seem to have any usefullness to me. why just get a low end unit when you can get a nice one that does a lot of stuff. but then again, $400 might be beyond others limits.
02/10/2006 at 3:42 pm #1741195I picked up a Palm T|X with WiFi and Bluetooth delivered for $260.
02/10/2006 at 10:29 pm #1741196I guess lets just remember, you dont need to purchase a brand new PDA with all the fancy stuff on it to use for “paperless”. You can find a used older model that works great. Guess it just all depends on the person and what kind of accessories you want on your PDA. I would rather have a older model that if I accidently drop im not out 2-300 dollars.

I totally agree. If I only wanted it for geocaching, I’d buy a cheap black/white on ebay … that would be a no brainer. In my case I’ve got another application that takes a lot of memory and benefits from color (QuickVerse 2005 bible software) … so for me the PDA is for both in the woods and in the Word. But this does cause me the need to “protect my investment” a bit … I typically have it tucked into our geo-bag when not actually reading the screen and I bought a waterproof cellphone bag for $3 that I slip it into when we cross a creek or something.
Speaking of protecting your investment … a tip … take one of those screen protectors that are used for PDAs and cut it to the size of your GPSr screen … stick it on … it protects your GPSr from SOME scratches if you drop it.

I’ll show how an inexpensive Palm M500 will work extremely well for paperless caching (typically around $50 range on ebay)I have 3 palms (2 M500, 1 M515) that will be available at the event for training purposes, they will be available afterwards for purchase as well.
(Pricing will be comparable, if not less than recent e-bay auctions, but you get to try before you buy.) -
