Yeah… I’m with the majority. We’re not able to make the picnic this year, but part of the fun of these events (from our WGA campout experience in May) is knowing that there is only a certain amount of time and that everyone is out doing the caches with you. Everyone is on the same page!
I’ll be the first person to say that I KNOW there will be people out there Friday searching for caches. It’s inevitable. It’s like putting a bottle of good vodka in front of a recovering alcoholic. It’s not a trust issue (that’s petty) it’s a fact. There are those that just won’t be able to resist the temptation to search out some caches. Yeah… some of the “holier than thou” cachers that post in this forum are bound to cry foul at that remark – but it’s reality…
Keep your topo maps, itineraries, etc… for other regular caches. Put yourselves on the same page as the avarage cacher at the picnic this weekend and relax… have fun. That’s what this is about. If you don’t get your 13,000th cache this weekend without the head start… oh well. Live with it… Lord knows there is some magnetized cache on a highway girder on the way home you can log… Take a few minutes in the morning, download the waypoints like everyone else, chat a bit, have some soda and take it easy…
I’m sure I’ll get flamed in the forums for these comments – but I’ll live!
Cache on folks – have a great time this weekend. Take few minutes to take in your surroundings…

08/19/2004 at 12:39 am #1758266Great comments everyone, I’m glad to see/hear everyone’s opinions on the matter.
I think we did a good job of beating this topic to death . Looks like we have plenty of people in both camps.
I’m glad we have members that make suggestions for new ideas, and members open enough to hash out these topics.
08/19/2004 at 4:13 am #1758267Being an out-of-state member, I dont get any other chance ot meet and form friendships with the awesome group of cachers from Wisconsin. I would really be disappointed if the upload is ever changed for the events put on by the WGA.
I have attended the first 2 Campouts and last years picnic, and will be bringing a couple of other Iowa cachers along to this years Picnic. I’ve got pictures of cachers in the woods, but the best Pictures and memories seem to come from the morning activities of loading the info and froming a quick plan of attack. The excitement level is at a peak, and everyone is ready to go.
I am currently involved in froming a group similar to the one wisconsin has formed, and many of the ideas I suggest are born in some manor from the practices of this group.
If the practice of early release is ever undertaken I think a document could be drafted that you would have to identify yourself to gain access to. This would cover the act of agreeing to the disclaimer protecting the WGA.
Can’t wait for the event.
Team Kilroy was here!08/19/2004 at 9:39 pm #1758268Let me ask this question then.
Why is it a bad thing for someone to go early Friday evening and search for the caches?
Before you reply,
Stating that “Because the event is on Saturday.” is not a reason why people should not be able to hunt caches on Friday night. Why are caches hidden and posted? to be found! What is the big deal about finding caches the night before if it happens to be convienient, fun, whatever, etc.
The folks that are getting upset about finding caches early are also the ones claiming we are “petty” about numbers. I just want to go cache! The only worry and pettines seems to be the distinction without a difference about caching on Friday night or Saturday.
Don’t get me wrong, folks. The hider of the cache/ planner of the event has the priviledge of making the rules for the cache. But guess what. I am the WGA. You are the WGA. This is an organization of people and cachers who should do their best to be as inclusize and accomodating as possible. There is no reason for any elitism or name calling.
Brian wants a “pro”? How about…
– flexibiltity for all cachers involved
– more time to enjoy the company of other cachers
– time to cache when its not a zoo full of people traipsing around turning over every tree stump and flattening every green plant in sight
– more time to enjoy with my family and/or other team members
– more opportunities for the hider to have thier cache found and enjoyed.
– as this activity is also one where the socially “behind the scenes” folks can participate, how bout giving them a chance without the “pressure” or anxiety of a public group setting. The fact that some caches are not placed until the day/ morning is irrelevant as a simple disclaimer stating “cache at your own risk, it may not be there.” will suffice.
I am glad to see the tremendous amount of interest in this topic. I am just having a hard time understanding how the friendly folks I’ve met are having such a difficult time finding a way to expand our sport in a positive direction instead of closing more doors to folks who, like you, just want to enjoy caching in thier own way.

08/19/2004 at 9:50 pm #1758270Gosh, All I asked was, “Will the cache waypoints be available for downloading online, before the event opens”! Now I want to see a record number of replies to this thread! It’s not about the numbers. It’s about the quality of replies. Oh, wait a minute, it is about the numbers!
08/19/2004 at 10:20 pm #1758271The reasons for making this a Saturday event have already been stated above.
There are currently 2111 caches in Wisconsin that can be hunted right now. No waiting necessary.
And I don’t think anyone previously called anyone else petty.
08/19/2004 at 10:30 pm #1758272I can see both sides of the coin in this discussion and can’t say that I care either way if waypoints were released early or not. Meanwhile, I do see about 20 pre-existing caches in the vicinity of the picnic which are ready for hunting.
I’m looking forward to a fun weekend, irregardless of any caches at all.
08/19/2004 at 10:35 pm #1758273Petty? I thought they meant we were pretty.
I really must get my reading glasses fixed.
Okay everybody – back to having fun.
Kill this thread Brian before it goes any further.
I have had an urge to get this topic discussed for a while and now that it has been discussed I have found that I no longer care.08/19/2004 at 10:38 pm #1758274I think I’ll wait till we have sung, before I eat the cake. [another metaphore].
tb08/19/2004 at 10:55 pm #1758275Closing this thread.
08/20/2004 at 1:37 am #1758276I had to chime in one final time.
Event caches are primarily social events. The temp caches are included to enhance the event. The focus of a event is social activity.
I guess it not supposed to be about just finding caches.
