Pat, Are you saying you DON’T want sandburs?

I noticed in reading the blog that the previous record is 407. Yowza, so this kind of thing has happened more than once.

I think our best day was around 65, and that was during Cash Bash. No temps or anything. I need to say that both years, I was in Illinois during the time Dick was at Bash, and got 4-6 caches traveling home on the same day, so it inflated our numbers just a little.

It’s fun to get some numbers days, but we still prefer finding a worthy destination, then grabbing whatever easy stuff is along the way. Or picking an area and trying to cache it out. We don’t discriminate against any particular cache type, either. If it’s solved, we’ll look! But Pat’s right, there’s something for everyone and I don’t want to ever be critical of others’ choices in this game.

I just heard about this on the Podcacher Podcast. I can imagine they are taking a long break from each other, the car, and probably geocaching!

25-27 was the most we did in a day. We did it on the Bob series in Illinois. Had a lot of fun, but back then it was about the numbers. Now it’s about the people and places.

I had plans to do BOB but it folded before I got out there…..would have been a fun day.

Goes to show there’s something for everybody in this game

Some people like the numbers, some people like the challenges, some people like puzzles, some people like long hikes, some people like placing caches, some people like to cache alone, some people like winter caching . . . but we ALL like geocaching!

(But if I wanted sandburrs on my shoes, I would have just gone into the empty lot behind us. 😉 )

Yeah, I think that is exactly right….Different strokes for different folks and everybody can and should cache the way that makes them happiest.

I do think that what they did here kind of combined numbers with a puzzle while combining it with a huge challenge, the world record for most in a single day. So that is kind of cool.

I like interesting challenges, but this is one that I dont think I will go for, though it would be possible with the easy caches along the roads in central Illinois.

For those interested in doing lots of real crappy caches to meet a personal goal of a certain number of finds in one day, take a look at the caches owned by mutherandsun in central Illinois. It would not be real hard to grab 200 of them in a single day with a small amout of planning, as they are almost all road sign caches.

Wow. I know it’s different strokes for different folks, but I can’t help look at this and wonder what’s the point? And so much for needing a GPSr for the hunt on these.

Speaking for our team I can say I hope this type of outcropping never comes to this area…though I could see it happening.

Yeah, what is the point of that other than numbers padding?
If it comes to that for caching around these parts, I’ll move on to something else that’s actually worth my time and money.

Now set those power trails on a bike path and I’ll go for the two wheeled self propelled record. I’d ride all day and night. Going past the point of exhaustion is really fun and highly underrated.

    413 caches in a single day…..wow…..

Sorry, I don’t believe it for a minute. I don’t care how much planning was involved. I could see a few people caching simultaneously and placing stickers on the logs to do it, but that’s it. Even if they were all together I find it impossible to keep up that pace for 24 hours. Nothing anyone says can change my mind on this one.

    #1913963

According to our math, that gives them about 3 minutes and 30 seconds per cache. That includes putting your sticker on the log, replacing the cache, and driving 528 feet to the next cache. That leaves very little time for searching for the cache- and they claim 24 dnfs that are not included in our time estimate. Any stop for gas, any cache that takes longer to find, and you have less time per cache. And, you have to keep that pace up for 24 hours including searching in the dark.

To do this without splitting up would be on the edge of possible- but I would think only with someone along who already knows where all the caches are. And then, are you geocaching or just putting stickers in logs?

I have no doubt that they did it, and did it without cheating. Just look at the pics and you can see they are all together.

And as far as the math, their best hour was 27/hour, but most hours they were in the 12 – 18/hour range is definately doable if you are just doing roadside caches that have become quite popular in CO, IL and elsewhere.

And yes, I think that there is not a lot of a good reason to place or find a roadside cache. The point of a cache should be to take you somewhere interesting. But that is just my opinion, and in the end, we all should play the game the way we want.

I have no doubt that they completed the task. It would be too easy for someone to spot-check the cache logs for missing or out of sequence logs, particularly since the caches they found are bound to be under more scrutiny now.

I know I said “what’s the point” but that really relates to the cache density and road-sign hides on the trails in the map. As far as this team’s accomplishment goes, it is remarkable in the context of this game. After all, this is a game that celebrates numbers–people getting 1,000 or 10,000 finds…teams setting out to do “numbers runs”…power caching in general. So the fact that they were able to do it better than anyone else has done is something they should get credit for.

I’m guessing each of us deals with family and friends who look at geocaching and don’t “get” the goal of it. Here is a team that set a goal and accomplished it. Agree with the goal or not, it was well done.

Ok, Zuma and I are thinking alike. Next thing you know Marc will buy me a beer, and Obama will cut income taxes in half. 😯

we found 35 caches on monday and it about did me in, and towards the end i was like ok we just need to go home. I cant even imagine doing 400+.

    #1913968

I could not imagine doing that many in that amount of time. I know I only have 160 finds to my name, but I would say I like a nice mix of quality and quantity. When we have a day that we can devote to caching we pick a general area, and then a “destination cache”. We plan out a route too and back from that cache hitting as many as we can while still keeping our sanity and enjoying each and every search. We know how much time we have, and we fit in the most “quality” caches we know we have time to do. We skip many caches that we feel are not worth the time compared to others. That is our definition of power cacheing.

All that being said..I still think it is cool that they accomplished the goal they set out to do. No matter what, that is impressive…just not our cup of joe.
