For those interested in doing lots of real crappy caches to meet a personal goal of a certain number of finds in one day, take a look at the caches owned by mutherandsun in central Illinois. It would not be real hard to grab 200 of them in a single day with a small amout of planning, as they are almost all road sign caches.
There are a bunch north of Bloomington/Normal, too, though not as thick as those on the map gotta run posted–yet. On our last pass through that area we were checking on some caches to try and saw a whole bunch in a line. Saw that they were road sign caches and went looking at others. Don’t mind a road sign or two, but that many?
We enjoyed the Lost Highway series in that area of Illinois by bjstover. Those were a bunch of dead ends, but with a variety of hides and all with a story of how I39 made them dead ends. Only twelve of those, plus the final.
09/10/2009 at 1:38 am #1913970The dictionary sitting next to me defines a “game” as “a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.”
If everybody plays any way they want you don’t have a game at all. An activity maybe, but you don’t have a game.
It’s just sad to see this sort of thing because geocaching used to be such a neat way to spotlight those cool places on the planet- thin spaces where the past seems like it’s such a small touch away that your spine tingles, beautiful views, interesting geology, fascinating people, etc. Then some folks got confused and thought it was all about slapping stickers in the most plastic containers off the side of the road…
09/10/2009 at 2:33 am #1913971Just found this map on MutherAndSun’s profile. Looks like they’re outlining the different counties with their sign hides. Maybe some creativity in that.
09/10/2009 at 11:12 am #1913972OPS, I agree with the definition, but not your conclusion. I don’t see geocaching as “competitive” (including the LCG!). If that makes it an “activity” according to Webster so be it. People can trumpet their “World Record” all they want but who really gives a darn if you find 500 caches in a day or 100,000 caches in a lifetime? Should someone try to lord their figures over my head, and I will laugh in their general direction.

There is still plenty of opportunity in geocaching for that. I don’t see the two spectrums – wild 5/5 opportunities and 1/1 driveups – being mutually exclusive.

And look at that… they wrote “mother” in the middle of all of it.
09/10/2009 at 3:02 pm #1913974actually they wrote “muther”. a slight typo…

09/10/2009 at 4:34 pm #1913976So then they made a typo in their username 😛
Sheesh.. Tough crowd…

09/10/2009 at 7:49 pm #1913978I met Muther last year at a birthday event down there. Nice lady. A power cacher for certain!
09/10/2009 at 7:50 pm #1913979BTW, Team BAG did 50+ caches around the Pardeeville area yesterday.
09/10/2009 at 8:30 pm #1913980I just can’t keep silent on this one. After reading the entire thing a few thoughts come to mind
1) How many Seldom|Seen caches were included? (Oh that’s right – none).
2) Maybe Geocaching needs a new category called “Driveby”? Then those that aren’t interested could exclude them just like puzzles or multi’s.
3) Being an engineer / programmer makes me wonder if we should devise a new metric. Something similar to the LCG except we should include a logarithmic scale to give more credit for higher star ratings. A S|S cache might be the equivalent of 20 driveups (or more). It is different strokes for different folks. I personally agree with MuddyBottoms that I like a mix. It keeps it interesting, generates some numbers, and gets us off the couch. The problem with signposts is you don’t have to get out of the car (hardly). It’s truly the variety that makes this what it is, but I’m hoping the signposts don’t eat up the great real estate for good quality caches. It’s easy to place a sign post, but it takes real planning and thought to put together some of the great puzzle caches that I’ve experienced (thanks S|S, cheeto, etc.).
My preference is to place / search quality caches. That means going someplace interesting and trying to avoid the drive ups. My 10 year old daughter is also getting into caching, so we cache together as good quality family time. I personally enjoy taking 45 minutes at the Golden Arches to have lunch with her, or playing at a park cache for 30 minutes after finding it.

This looks easy but in reality I looked at the map more closely and many of these caches are not on single roads as they would appear…they are very often on several different roads where you are forced to snake up and down to get to them…

50 caches without rushing about I might add. Must be around my 10th 45+ cache outing with Marc. Careful route planning makes these outings a whole lot easier.

Take a looksee at this example: http://dgpstats.com/info/aboutchallengepoints.html and the stats tracking page: http://dgpstats.com/
What’s interesting is the “Effort Avoidance Theory in Geocaching” that is applied in this example.
Sounds like it certainly adds a different twist to the “game” for those folks that participate in this.
Very similar (though much more complex) than our WGA LCG.
Applying an additional bragging rights/competition/reward system on top of the existing boring smiley count…
Interesting concept really.
