Does anyone have any experience with power inverters? I guess what I’m looking for is some input from someone who actually owns one (not ‘visit http://www.whatever.com and read about them’). I’ll be using one to charge my Palm, AA batteries, laptop. Any suggestions? 😕

    Good Evening Brett:

I have used quite a few different ones.

For one, you can get a DC-AC Inverter. You plug it in to your cigar Lighter, and it gives you 110volts AC (House Current). Then you can plug in your laptop, Palm, AA Battery Charger, what have you.

There is a Company called igo (http://www.igo.com) They sell some neat stuff. They have a power system, that you can plug into AC, or DC, and then you buy the Tips for the devices that you have.

I have two of the Igos. I have the Igo Anywhere 130 for the laptop, and other devices

I also have the Igo anywhere 15. This is only for Palms, PocketPC, Cellphones, and things that don’t draw all that much current.

I also have a 140 Watt DC-AC Inverter, a 80 Watt DC-AC Inverter, and a 300 Watt AC-DC Inverter. 80, and 140, are for small things. Small TV’s DVD Player, and Laptop. 300 Watt will run larger TV, Coffee Pot, Air Mattress Inflator…

If you have any more questions, Just let me know.

I’ve got a 400 watt Schumacher from fleet farm, think I got it on sale for 39.00? Schumacher has been in the 12v business for a while, I’m not sure what else they do but I remember people having their 12v battery chargers when I was younger. Not sure on any other brand.

It came with either cigarette lighter plug or direct to battery cables. I used the power plug on the console for a while but the kids kept kicking at it so I finally wired it direct to the battery with proper fusing.

On our trip out east I thought it had took a dump and I stopped at wally world and bought a small one that plugged into the cig lighter only, it had a really noisy fan and got very hot running my laptop. I don’t recommend using those. Turns out it didnt, the cig plug needs replaced as it has poor contacts.

I’ve also found that I’ve used it for a lot more things than the original reason I bought it. I would highly suggest that you oversize it and wire it direct to battery with proper fusing. All the bigger ones I’ve seen have a power switch on them so you can turn it off when not in use.

I bought a cheap one from WalMart to power my laptop while on the road Geocaching and it worked fine, but I found that slow computer to be more of a pain than what it was worth. I have a feeling that it would work good enough in your case too.
