Premium member logging help?

Can someone aid and abet us here? Our grandson Pooh’s Pal doesn’t have a premium membership and I know there’s some secret way he can log such a cache. How does that work? Thanks.

When he gets a job and can pay for it, we’ll encourage that. But at the moment, he’s only two. Any scribbled signatures on area caches lately are probably his. The independence of a two year old!

The “back door” requires the help of a premium member. Go to the cache page and click the “Log your visit” link. Highlight the entire address in the address bar and copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl+C, or right click and select Copy).
Email the link text to the non premium member. Or, log out of GC and have the non member log in. The can then paste the link into tha address bar and navigate to the logging page.

Another option is to e-mail the CO of a premium cache. Some CO’s may be willing to temporarily make the cache a regular cache so the non premium member cacher can log the find then they will change the cache back to premium.

Not all CO’s will do this though. All depends who the CO is and other circumstances.

It’s now OK to disregard the CO’s intent/wishes by encouraging and allowing non-PMO backdoor logging? At the very least, shouldn’t the CO be asked first?

Well, in the specific case we wondered about, the cache owner was right there with us when our grandson found it. He didn’t say we couldn’t help him log it and seemed to enjoy watching the little guy’s eyes light up at the sight of a footlocker in his back yard filled with stuff.

I know why you ask T&B. Years ago, Duck used to find caches with us and as a non-PMO he wasn’t able to log them.

I know in years past,, if the PM is signed in, opens the cache page, and clicks the “log your visit”, when the log visit page loads up, the PM logs out, the non-PMO logs in, it will be right on the “log visit” page and the non PMO can submit a log. Don’t know if it works anymore though. Duck used this method once with the CO’s permission. Seemed pretty easy.

Any of the premium caches that I own, this is how I would like it done, and would do this for any reason.

The little booger walked over a mile to find a few caches. Refused to fall asleep, though. He could probably do the ET Trail in half the time with less sleep than we’d need, LOL.

He has yet to hit 100, though. It is fun to take him out now, cause he kind of gets what it’s about and likes to look and hold the GPSr. It was nice to visit the PMO cache, as there are darn few around here big enough for making trades.

I wasn’t commenting on the “rightness” or “wrongness” of the practice. It is a well known back door and can be easily found by anyone with a little searching.

What happens to the audit log on the Premium only cache if the CO opts to temporarily open it to all members? Does this terminate the original audit and restart when the cache is moved back to PMO?

If so, I can understand why some owners would choose to have the NPM use the backdoor.

I’ve tested this on some of my own and the stats appear to stay in tact.

I’ve never done this, but have contacted a couple of CO’s to ask if they would allow my children (non-Premium) to log it if they were with me. One CO said they would drop the premium status temporarily to log it. The other CO didn’t respond, so when we do that cache I’m going to use the backdoor method

My preference is to contact the CO first to explain the situation and attempt to get their permission. If they were to respond with “Please don’t log it if you’re not a premium member.” then I would respect their request.

None of my caches are premium caches. They all are meant to be found by everyone.

If I was to have an unique cache or have one in front of my house (which I am considering), I might consider making it a PMO cache, but for the most part, I want all geocachers to find my caches.

So no worries about non premium cachers finding my caches and having to log them.
