Just a reminder–when we were out placing our cache yesterday, our geodog came along. We pulled seven deer ticks off her before we even got out of the woods, and I had one crawling on my hand later in the day.

So check yourself and any dogs while you’re out!

I just pulled a deer tick off my shirt after some yard clean-up this morning. These are the teeny ones which have the potential to cause Lyme disease. You really need to look carefully to find ’em, and they are small enought that they are not always felt as they crawl. This is the second time already this year, they are out pretty early.

    cYa, be careful! Grandpa

Wow, cached all day Saturday near Mountain and Crivitz and didn’t see any ticks. Guess it won’t be much longer until they are out in full force in our neck of the woods, thanks for the heads up!

Not only the North woods, but here in SE Wisconsin too (Milwaukee area). I pulled a wood tick out of my son’s ear yesterday.

I found a product that works pretty well. Some may have heard of it, some not. I’s called REPEL Permanone that you spray one clothing and other gear and is to last even through a few washes. I spray it one my pants and a pair of boots. It come in a small Blue and copper can and Wally World does does carry it. I think it cost around $5-$6 or so.

I’m really glad you mentioned that. I just packed our “tub o’ deet” for our trip to Milwaukee.

    Thanks! 🙂

Here’s an email I received that you may want to pass along to family and friends:

Please heed this warning. It could happen to you.

    TICK WARNING!

I hate it when people forward bogus warnings, and I have even done it
    myself a couple times unintentionally…
but this one is real, and it’s important. So please send this warning
to everyone on your e- mail list.

If someone comes to your front door saying they are checking for
ticks due to the warm weather and asks you to take your clothes off and
dance around with your arms up, DO NOT DO IT!! THIS IS A SCAM!!
They only want to see you naked.

I wish I’d gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid.

I use that permodone ( I think that’s how you spell it ) it works great. I was at work collecting snakes in one of our future subdivisions and everyone found at least 10 ticks on then I only found 1 and it was just crawling around looking for a new place to go

Well, I have been bitten ……………..!

Missed a tick in Iowa the end of April. Found it after a couple of days. Pulled it out / off successfully, but it had bitten.

After about 7-10 days the bulls-eye appeared. This morning it was a slight itch. Tonight, it a lot worse.

Thats more of marc that i really needed to see.. GO see a doctor!! We can talk about this in the car!!

    #1873258

Was it a deer tick or wood/dog tick? Typically the bulls eye in 80 – 90% of cases is an indication of Lyme disease.

Did you keep the tick? If so you can have it tested. If not then I would monitor your symptoms and if they seem to match Lyme disease see a Doctor ASAP.

If it was a deer tick and it has been 10 days after the bite (and long enough for the bite irritation to have healed) this un-medical opinion is that you have Lyme’s Disease.

Been there, done that, hope I’m not doing it again (pulled two embedded deer ticks off of me after Hartman.)

When my rash showed up 2 weeks after the bite, even before other symptoms showed up, my doctor put me on antibiotics. I was very glad for that since that evening I developed a 104 fever and truly felt the worst I’ve ever felt from sickness. I can only imagine how bad it would have been if I wasn’t already on antibiotics.

Don’t mess with it. Please. I have a friend who’s Lyme’s Disease went undiagnosed for three months. It took a very long time for him to recover. Please at least have it checked by a Lyme’s knowledgeable doctor.

      Hope I’m wrong.

I’ve only had one tick on me thus far this spring and I spotted it as it fell onto my arm from the pine tree I was searching. I’ve been loading up on Deet and I re-dose every few hours. Long pants and long sleeved shirts tight at the neck and wrist have been my caching garb, and will continue to be, until the ticks ease a bit. I even bound up the legs of my pants with rubber bands when I knew I was going to be heading through long grass on my way to a cache. Lymes disease is nothing to mess with and the discomfort of restrictive clothing is far easier to handle than the alternative.

It was a wood tick. Did see a doctor. On antibotics.
