I haven’t been doing this long but I have done like 12 multi caches and a couple of Mystery/ puzzle. Most of the multi have been math based figure out ABC, XYZ. Only a couple have been coordinates at wy1 to take you to wy2 and so on. To me coordinates from point A to point B is a true multi and the math based one’s are mystery/ puzzle. I know there are other types of mystery / puzzle caches besides math based one’s. Don’t you think they ought to have a new classification for Mystery Multi’s?
04/05/2015 at 6:36 am #2038298I wish that there was a different classification for puzzles and challenges, but that’s just me. But yes, I’ve often wondered about that. And when creating the page, which to choose, the multi or the puzzle icon.

04/23/2015 at 11:23 pm #2039182That’s the same thing I was thinking when I put out such a cache several years ago, a field puzzle that I decided to classify as a multi. . .because those tend to be looked at and found more often than the mystery types. One thing I did as a CO was put in the Field Puzzle attribute so others will at least know what to look out for.

Obviously, there are exceptions to that and the argument that such a cache should be listed as a Mystery cache has merit but that’s my philosophy. That being said, if Groundspeak were to change the guidelines and state that all Multicaches had to have a physical element at the posted coordinates or else they had to be listed as Mystery caches, I’d be ok with it.
For a mystery/puzzle cache, I look at the posted coordinates as being just a spot on the map that don’t really relate to the cache itself. Usually, finding the coordinates for the next stage/final is done via something on the cache page itself so visiting the posted coordinates isn’t necessary.
04/24/2015 at 11:29 am #2039192One of the first caches that I placed when I first started out was really a field solve puzzle but, since one had to go to multiple locations to solve it, I listed it as a multi-cache. Later I found out that I should have probably listed it as a mystery/puzzle cache although Groundspeak’s guidelines are not clear on the distinction in cases like this. I asked a reviewer if I could change it but was told they would not do that. Their reasoning was that doing so would set a precedent and change cachers’ “statistics”. This would upset many cachers who concentrate their efforts on certain kinds of caches.

04/24/2015 at 9:50 pm #2039205Mult-caches have always been one of my favorites. I own three and 2 of the 3 are true 3 stage caches were you actually travel to various locations. The other is a multi idea which I stole from Bartrod that I liked so much I had to create one of my own. I really enjoy the aspect of traveling a specific area exploring it or getting to know it better.
One actually has a 100% favorite points! (O.K., it only has one finder…)
