One of the initiatives introduced at the Feb 2005 BOD meeting was to create a display and rent space at the Milwaukee Sports Show and other outdoor Expos for the purpose of getting information of geocaching to sports minded individuals. What are your thoughts on this initiative?

Once again, another great Idea, and I would be more than willing to help out with this. Anything to bring Geocaching out to the Non-Geocaching public, is a plus in my book. Maybe this way, the cops will know it is a geocache in a BLAZE ORANGE Match Stick case, and not bomb!!!!!

I’d like to see the discussion on this issue held back 23 months ago. I’m not against putting together a booth, but I wonder how many of our “new recruits” would be reached through an event like the sports show. Perhaps we would be more effective at a technology fair, a gaming convention, or a senior expo. I’m thinking we might do well to survey our current membership to find out how they could have been reached before they found geocaching and how they actually found out about it. From there, we could decide what venues would be best to recruit new members.

I like this idea, and would also pursue getting assistance from Groundspeak as well sponsorship/giveaways from related companies such as Garmin, DeLorme, Gander Mountain, etc.

I’d look at electronics shows as well. GPS receiver popularity seems to be increasing, so having a booth at one of those events to say “Congrats on your new GPS purchase! Here’s something fun you can do with it!” would be effective.

      Regarding the Expo Booth proposal:

“When you know something, say what you know. When you don’t know something, say that you don’t know. That is knowledge.” – Kung Fu Tzu (Confucius)

So with that note, I will admit that I do not know if this is a good idea or not. I would want to do a needs assessment to see if there was a need for this, what the anticipated benefits might be, and what the cost would be prior to making a decision.

I don’t see a need to do this. If we charged for membership, this would be a great way to try to increase our membership, and revenue. Since membership is free, I don’t see any need to court new members in a “booth” type setting.

Vince Condella, a Fox6 meteorologist, has a nightly “Caching with Condella” segment on his newscast. He has done more to spread the word about geocaching, then we could ever do at the sports show.

I don’t see any benefit to having a sports show booth.

Having the experience of sitting in expo booths for years twiddling my thumbs, I am against this idea. People who go to expos are there for “something free to do this weekend” and the giveaways. Sure, we may get a few folks interested in geocaching, but we’d get more by simply telling muggles just exactly why we’re dodging into the woods.

I think I spoke to you about this in the past Beast. I thought it was a great idea. Of course, it’s getting people to man the booth for the extended time. If it is over my time off or I have time knowing in advance to re-arrange my schedule, I would be there ins a second. I love that kind of stuff!! Of course having at least one WGA BOD member there at all times would be important, then finding other “active” or “new” members would be great.

      * Active members offer their enthusiasm for the sport.

      * New Members can do the same and share their first time experiences.

Making of a display is easy enough. I currently own one I made up for my classes and events here at Woodland Dunes. This is another thing I enjoy doing immensely…. being creative while offering/sharing interesting information.

If this can be done without a large outlay for renting booth space, etc. I would have no problem throwing a booth together and having volunteers staff it. This would definitely fall into the realm of community education. The key to this and many of the proposals mentioned is resources. Where do we best put to use the resourses of the WGA to best fulfil our mission as put forward in the by-laws.

This was all we needed to start up.

Vegas Gamblers has a point here. Vince Condella has done more for geocaching than any single other person in the state.

This is true you guys, but there are many people from other parts of the state who have never seen nor heard of Vince that may be drawn to the Expo!! All many of us get in other parts of the state are the nagative news stories (aka the Appleton Alderman and the bomb scare issues)

Wish we did get Vince way up here. It would be fun to watch the segments. I get to see the post shows via links that people put on here, but that’s ok for me, since I am already a cacher.

I agree with Zuma, Rogheff, and Brian that this is probably unnecessary due to the outlay of resources. Again this sounds like a benefit just to the Milwaukee area. ????? Education of the sport is important but let resources be used to benefit ALL members.
